Magical, Richly Inventive, Creative: Jack Vance is a unique phenomenon in literature. If you are looking for a formulaic sword and sorcery book that is a dim imitation of Lord of the Rings, and there are many, well, you won't get that here with The Green Pearl. This is a freshly imagined, rich universe that delivers the feeling of being immersed in a fantasy world like no other. Readers need to know that The Green Pearl is the second in the Lyonesse series, the first of which is Suldrun's Garden, which you would be better off reading before you read this one. This trilogy is set among a collection of imaginary islands somewhere off the coast of England or Ireland. The backdrop is an ongoing struggle between the various feudal or petty kingdoms to become top dog over all the others -- to find a King who can unite the entire realm under a single monarchy. Against the theater of this struggle are all kinds of doings between powerful wizards and magicians, fairy folk, trolls, ogres, brave knights and lovely maidens-- I know, it all sounds like standard fairy tale fare, but Vance has the ability to make everything new, as if he was the guy to invent the genre in the first place. The Green Pearl is more Jack Vance at his plain old brilliant self. By Ken Korczak on April 30, 2011
