I'm a firm believer in the rights and empowerment of women. I'm actually a firm believer in those things for any human which is why this "new classic" of feminist literature rubs me the absolute wrong way. It is everything that I fear about modern feminism which is to say that it strays so far int...

This book is a collection of essays by Rebecca Solnit, all more or less on feminist topics. The essays are well written, and I did get a bit of kick out of the story of the man who decided to tell her about her own book without realizing that she was the author. I'm not sure how much any of the essa...

So very good. I suggest that you read this if you have time. It's fantastic and there are so many stats that will make your head swim. To be a woman in the world means you are intrinsically in danger. Most of that danger comes from men and even from well-meaning men who just can't help "explaining" ...

I expected the essay on men actually explaining things to women in the way they do that spawned the term "mansplain". It's one of my favorite words. I've even shared it with other men who love it just as much. They know the ones that are notorious for it, the ones who always try to shut down the wom...

Great collection of essays detailing exactly what feminism is supposed to be, and what it fights for and against.Only major criticism I have lies in what I would call a lack of intersectionality, though Solnit's talent in being able to express that just because she stands up for these things doesn't...

"Six years ago, when I sat down and wrote the essay 'Men Explain Things to Me,' here's what surprised me: though I began with a ridiculous example of being patronized by a man, I ended up with rapes and murders. We tend to treat violence and the abuse of power as though they fit into airtight cat...

I've been an admirer of Rebecca Solnit for several years now - I'm continually impressed by her way with words and ability to dig to the core of things, even when they are multifaceted and complex. It's no surprise I found this book brilliant. What is a surprise is just how badly I want to press thi...

I didn't know this book was a collection of essays when I first sat down with it. I thought it was an expansion on the title essay. I would have enjoyed this book more if I'd known what to expect, so in case you didn't know, either: this book is a collection of feminist essays. Some of the writing h...

All of these essays are well-written, and most are thought provoking, but the collection is too short (particularly given the price).
