Sometimes, I try something new. I’ll pick up an author I haven’t read before, without recommendations from trusted friends, on the strength of the synopsis and a scan of reviews from total strangers. It’s worth the gamble of my precious reading time, because I’ve occasionally found new authors and t...
This is one of those books that must give publishers the vapours. Police procedural? Sci-fi? Mystery? Grit-lit? Well….yes, it is. All of the above. So instead of trying to label it, I’ll do my best to describe this heartfelt & thought provoking read. The first book I read by this author was the fa...
Book # 3, in Michael Kelly, PI seriesThrillers are all about fast-paced plots and a hero that faces impossible situations and somehow get himself/herself out just in the nick of time. Definitely Michael Harvey has patted down this formula to a tee and is exploring it to the max. In the previous nove...
“At the centre of our being is a point of nothingness which is untouched by sin & by illusion, a point of pure truth….” By the time Bobby Scales quotes Thomas Merton, you already know he’s not your garden variety thug. But then he never really had a chance to be anything else. The book opens in ...

Ho hum, just what I was worried about, this one didn't even compare to the first book in the series. Here's why:- There was something really off about the rhythm of the story.- It was more political thriller than gritty noir detective story.- This one was much more showier than the first one and foc...
After having this on my "to-read" shelf for a long time, I finally found a used autographed copy at my local store. This was a well done "hard-boiled" detective story, in which the outcome was pretty shocking and not really expected. I liked the details about cold cases and the use of science at crim...
Ably read by Stephen Hoye who brings just the right amount of bemused detachment and cynicism to the character. Ex-cop Michael Kelly is now a P.I. whose former partner shows up at his door and tells about a case he wants to hire Kelly to work on, a rape that was being covered up by his superiors.Le...
