Sasha Newborn has written two novels, one poetry book, several translations, and organized a number of anthologies. Much of his (now her) efforts have gone into modernizing texts of minor and major classics; a recent project has led to the Shakespeare Playbook series: director workbooks for envisioning a production, while keeping track of all the details—timeline, auditioning, costumes, budget, sets and scenery, promotion. In other words, a book that invites the director or producer to participate with Shakespeare. Sasha is publisher of Bandanna Books, which has been oriented toward providing modernized or innovative versions of world classics for the college market. Notable has been tackling the as-yet-unresolved problem of the third person singular (unknown or hypothetical) pronoun—with eight versions of the I Ching, each with a different pronoun i.e., he, s/he, he/she, he or she, they, one, hu, she. Sasha has also recently reprinted some of the Mudborn Press titles, notably the Inklings bilingual series of poetry (Latvia, Portuguese, Nahuatl), as well as the bilingual Berlin anthology. Another interest, reflecting Sasha's own transgender experience, has been to republish the seven plays of Shakespeare with cross-dressing or transgender characters, to demonstrate historical transgenderism. Her latest literary venture has been TimeWell (timewell.us), a monthly literary magazine combining contemporary stories with excerpts from classic texts on a monthly theme.
