So I have trouble reading books with injustice in them. There's just so much in the world that when it crops up in my fiction I have a tough time handling it (it's why I had to stop reading Front Desk by Kelly Yang, I just had this overwhelming feeling of dread that her family was going to be taken ...

It is about an African American family and their struggle against racism. The main character, Cassie, has to learn the "do's" and "don'ts" that society requires. Becaus...

"Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry" is about three black children living in the segregated south during the Great Depression. This story looks at racism and how these children overcome the cruelty through the strength they find in each other and their family. I would use this in fifth or sixth grade to lo...
I really enjoyed this book. It felt very real. Fiction or no, the events in this book could actually have happened. I liked Cassie, though I didn't like everything that she did. The ending was stressful as well. Books need to have a climax, and then wrap up. This book had a climax, and a good one at...

Today’s generation of children, as well as many of their parents and teachers, have not had to endu...
So my class is finally done reading Roll of Thunder. Here are my thoughts.I guess this is an important book to read, but one scene irked me a bit (warning! There will be spoilers!)So when Cassie and her family go to Strawberry, Lillian Jean Simms (a white girl) humiliates her. Cassie responds by slo...
What I loved most about the book when I read it as a child was that I felt that I truly connected to the Logan children even though our backgrounds were vastly different. I felt empathy and love for them. Highly recommend.
3.5 starsHaving just finished The Help for the 2nd time, I was already in a place to appreciate this book, and for the most part, I did appreciate it. The Help takes place in the early 60's in Jackson, Mississippi, during the early stages of the Civil Rights movement. It's a very personal story abou...
I read this book in elementary school in English class. After that, the author came to our school to speak. I remember being touched deeply by this book and her story. I also remember getting to speak to her after and she signed my books. I don't know if she remembers this little white girl moved...
