When Max Costa signed up as a ballroom dancer for the Cap Polonio in 1928, he didn’t know he would meet a woman who would haunt him for the rest of his life. To be fair to Mecha Inzunza, she didn’t know she was going to meet the love of her life on a trip to Buenos Aires, either. Arturo Pérez-Revert...

Nope. Sorry. I get while the writer is well regarded. But there is something totally off putting in this book. Mostly because of the female characters. Sorry book, it's me, not you. (NYRB Book of the Month Dec 2015. Free per offer of joining for this year).

The story is about some almost aimless men meandering around flat terrain and occassionally having confusing conversations with each other or with the locals. The prose style of this one is also flat, confused, and meandering. I found this novel incredibly boring. My least favorite of his books, so ...

This small book packs a lot behind it. This book is a psychological study of good vs evil, of life in a small dying town, and a thriller to boot. Chantal Prym is on of the youngest people left in the town of Viscos. Her friends and peers have all left, her close relatives all deceased. She feels t...

I found the framing annoying, groping desperately for post-modernism and trying too hard to be smart. All of these are aspects to a book that will not warm me to it.

Mendoza is an important Spanish writer, and while City of Marvels is often recommended, Beatriz kinda liked this one better. It's lighter and more fun, and Marvels is about Barcelona in the early 20th century which I dunno, when I prepare for cities by reading books about what they were like a long ...

I was hesitant to start this because so many people have found his book, The Alchemist to be life-changing, and I thought it was a beautifully written metaphor, but never quite understood all of the hoopla. I thought The Devil and Miss Prym was an intriguing story. A man walks into a remote villag...
