The vivid, bright drawings in this book held my niece and nephew's eyes, while the lyrical text held their ears. Aside from Dr. Seuss, I can't usually get my niece and nephew to tune into stories with rhyming text. This is an exception to that rule.
Anything illustrated by Stephen Gammell is an adventure to discover. The story itself is a bit disturbing for a very young child but by elementary age children love love love being grossed out and find this book super funny.
