During the first reading I did think Elliot’s father was somewhat distracted by his studies and thought Elliot, although well behaved, was lonely (he would read to his stuffed toys). I did not blame Elliot for “adopting” Magellan; they seemed to belong together. I absolutely liked the surprise end...
Clever story. I love the penguin theme of this book and the interesting main character! Kids would love it! The illustrations are filled with clues that bring to light the wonderful surprise at the end!
This is child-centered fiction. The adults don't get in the way (Dad, Librarian--and where was aquarium security? Quietly never pictured.), and Elliot moves forward assuming they won't--even though I was worried the entire time about when he would be found out. "Wild surprise ending"? No, a calm vin...
Awwww! I've been a David Small fan for quite a while, now I'll have to add Toni Buzzeo to my list. Reminiscent of Mr. Popper's Penguins in the best way, I would expect this to be popular with any kid who dreams of having an unusual pet.
