Contrary to popular opinion, this was actually my favorite Jane Austen book. I've always enjoyed her books and this one really demonstrated how easily women were swayed from following their hearts to instead marrying for money. Great representation of social classes at the time.
Well, this is where I wish I paid more attention in my English Lit. classes. Then I could use this review to wax lyrical (or at least literate) about the exposition, the rising action, the climax and the ultimate resolution of Anne Elliot's story in Persuasion. Unfortunately, I didn't pay attentio...
Twenty-seven-year old Anne Elliot is Austen's most adult heroine. Eight years before the story proper begins, she is happily betrothed to a naval officer, Frederick Wentworth, but she precipitously breaks off the engagement when persuaded by her friend Lady Russell that such a match is unworthy. The...
Okay, guys. I have a confession to make. I hope you’ll still be my friends.I’m not a fan of Jane Austen. For starters, I’m not much of a romance reader. I do have romantic buttons, but they’re small and hard to find. I need some passion—by which I don’t even mean sex, but emotional intensity. Austen’...
I don’t believe in coincidence and commonly used oversimplifications of value and talent. Most things are what they are for a reason. Jane Austen is a literary myth for a reason. Jane Austen has always been a study in contrasts for me. I'd read 'classic' literature throughout my childhood, but for some reason, Austen was not one. It was not until high school when I was introduced to her through the films. First came Sense and Sensibility, not bad but somewhat Hollywoodized (...
The word persuasion appears thirteen times in Jane Austen's first novel, Sense and Sensibility. It appears only seven times in her last novel, although her brother Henry, who published it posthumously, chose it as the title. I'm guessing that Austen might have objected to this because her novel is a...
Pride and Prejudice has long been my favorite Austen, but after several rereadings, I think that Persuasion may have overtaken it at the top of the list (or at least equaled it). The heroine, Anne Elliot, is quiet and unassuming and the story of her romance with Captain Wentworth could hardly be mor...
