Travelling the highways and byways of these United States has been the purview of summer vacationers, spring breakers, holiday travelers and weekend warriors. But these are relative amateurs compared to the real professionals of America's roads: the retired. We know who they are, because we see them when we can take some time off to travel. They are running along the Interstates in their F350s pulling a huge trailer home or piloting an RV as big as a Greyhound bus. They have in their possession three key elements. They have their health. They have funds. And they have time. However, a new category of traveler has emerged in recent years due in part to the recession, but mostly, in the author's opinion, due to a long-repressed need to free themselves of the 9-5 constrictions and return to the freedom the 1960s offered. There are plenty "baby boomers" that have the means, the health and now the time to take on new challenges. This not-yet-retired, but "Out-of-Work" crowd is the new professional traveler. This book and my companion Web site (www.retiredoroutofwork.com) are a collection of travel articles by one of those in this "Retired or Out-of-Work" category. While most of the trips take place on his 2004 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide Ultra Classic, the locations are not the typical motorcycle destinations like the Myrtle Beach and Daytona Beach bike weeks or the Sturgis Rally. Originally written for a local motorcycle club chapter newsletter most of the trips can be taken by those who travel in "cages” and want to travel to interesting destinations.
