Richard Follett is Reader in American History at the University of Sussex, Brighton, England. He writes on the history of slavery and emancipation in the American South. Major publications include, The Sugar Masters: Planters and Slaves in Louisiana's Cane World, 1820-1860 and Slavery's Ghost: The Problem of Freedom in the Age of Emancipation (co-authored with Eric Foner and Walter Johnson).
