Low-key. Mostly inner-monologuing from the main character. I liked the atmosphere, and the uh...slice-of-life-ishness about nuns? All the characters were women, which was cool.

By the second half of the sixteenth century, the price of wedding dowries had risen so sharply within Catholic Europe that most noble families could not afford to marry off more than one daughter. The remaining young women were dispatched -- for a much lesser price -- to convents. Historians estimat...

I usually immediately launch myself into a Dunant novel and am immersed until I have finished. This book was the first one to break the pattern. Unlike The Birth of Venus or In the Company of the Courtesan, Sacred Hearts started out fairly slow and fairly boring, sad as it is to say. However, I stuc...

Excellent book. I learnt a lot about nuns in the 15th century. Plus it's just a really good, gripping read - especially towards the end where it really picks up pace.

I give this book 3.5 stars. The story is based on true events during the time when the Catholic Church was beginning a stricter regime. As a result of this change the convents which were the only environment where women enjoyed the freedom to be somewhat independent became threatened. Women from all...

"We ve come a long way, baby. It may be clichd, but Sacred Hearts shows the reader the strides women have made in the world. I remain utterly horrified at the fact that so many women were forced into the convents. When your options are to marry the man your father tells you to marry, submit to his...
