I think I would have enjoyed this more if it wasn't so similar to Pride and Prejudice with character and plot structure. I'm guessing that's what the author was aiming for, but I would have been quite happy for the P&P theme, with different characters and plot. It irked me strongly for some reason -...

This was an interesting premise, and I was excited to read it, but it ended up falling a bit flat for me. I had some problems with the development of the relationships between the heroine and certain people, particularly the one she ended up with. She spent the entire book pining for Mr. Dunkirk, o...

Clever, nice characters. A little superficial. For alternative history, I really love Sorcery and Cecelia or the Enchanted Chocolate Pot.

A treat. Well-written enough to get me past my indifference to the source material (Never cared for Austen or either Bronte sister. Sue me.) and I liked the elements of magic. Like the last book I read, not too sure I'm going to read the next book but in this case, I did enjoy it.

A solid three and a half on enjoyment level, but I'm registering it as a three for its insubstantiality and really, really heavy Austenian overtones. I'm all for homage, but it really feels like the set-ups and the relationships among the characters are just serials-filed-off versions of Jane Austen...

As someone who mainly reads fantasy and historical fiction/ romance...this was the perfect combination. I liked the mixture of the two worlds and they blended quite well. The magic was pretty well explained...but a bit confusing at times. It would have been nice to learn a bit more of how it all wor...

I want, so badly to give this book 5 stars, but I can't quite do it.Don't get me wrong, I love this book, but I can't quite bring it to the "it's amazing" level. It is precisely what everyone says it is (including the author herself) - a book modeled on Jane Austen's writing. I adore Austen's writ...

I enjoyed this gentle novel. It owes much to Jane Austen, one of my favorite writers. The plot is somewhat similar to Austen’s, the romantic, slightly ironic tone is down pat, and the timing is the same. But there is a deeper issue here than the paramount concern of Austen’s novels: that every young...
Goat Heads and Sand Burrs, P. Kirby's Reading Blog
My first impression would be "a Regency novel for people who don't like Jane Austen." Which is probably the opposite of how it's being marketed, but I found it readable and I'm NOT a fan of Austen.I've tried to read Pride and Prejudice, with and without zombies, and never made it beyond five pages w...

a pretty read. mary robinette kowal mimics very well jane austen's style, but i mourned for the subtle romance. i fear i'm getting rather used to the bold flirting and witty remarks, and jane ellsworth has such a low self-confidence regarding her looks that sometimes i wanted to sigh and roll my eye...
