The more I learn about him, the more convinced I am that Steve Martin is the ultimate Renaissance man. I read his most recent novel, An Object of Beauty, a few months ago and was impressed by his authorial talents, as well as his knowledge of great art. Though Shopgirl is a piece of his from a bit f...

I read and really enjoyed Martin's book "The Pleasure of my Company" a few years ago. It was quirky and sweet and I found it very funny in parts. I was hoping for more of the same with Shopgirl when I stumbled across the unabridged audio but for some reason it's not working for me. At all. I'm f...

I love Steve Martin and have loved his writings since his 80's comedy 'Cruel Shoes'. This is a completely different kind of book and he proves he's brilliant with anything he does.

I’m pretty torn on how I feel about this one. There were parts that I wasn’t crazy about (when Martin seems to be trying too hard to either get a laugh by nudge-nudging your ribs or seem “deep” by making his characters have mind-blowing epiphanies when it just doesn’t seem natural), but there were p...

Two years ago when I was on bedrest with my third child, three of my girlfriends got together and sent me a care package that included several books, one of which was Steve Martin's Shopgirl. I don't know how or why I missed reading it at the time since I was reading anything that wasn't nailed down...

I've read this twice now. The characters are complex, though not necessarily likable.

This was a truly pleasant surprise. I wasn't very sure what this book was even about (I don't like to thoroughly read descriptions; plus it is Steve Martin!) but it is short so I took a chance. If you love Steve Martin's movies, don't expect to love this book unless you have an open mind. This novell...

Basically a self-indulgent tryst with a working class girl, young enough to be his daughter, for Steve Martin's literary alter-ego.

I really enjoyed this. It's non-verbose and insightful. It seems a little clinical to me at times, though, but I guess that's to expected if you're used to the more mushy and more romantic style of other chick-lit. Interesting perspectives!I adore Steve Martin's film work, and now am a fan of his wr...
