In Regency London, Zacharias Wythe is England's first African Sorcerer Royal. And that's only the first of his problems. He must juggle the conflicting demands of a wayward Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers, where a faction schemes to remove him from his position by means fair or foul. He must cope with the Fairy Court refusing to grant Britain the magical resources it needs. And now the British Government is desperate to deploy this increasingly scarce magic in its war with France. He must also contend with rumours that he murdered his predecessor and guardian, Sir Stephen Wythe. But this task would be easier if Sir Stephen's ghost would just stop following him around. And now he has to deal with something even more outrageous than any of these things: a female magical prodigy.

Ambitious orphan Prunella Gentleman is desperate to escape the school where she has drudged all her life, and a visit by the Sorcerer Royal seems the perfect opportunity. For Prunella has just stumbled upon English magic's greatest discovery in centuries - and she intends to make the most of it.

2.5 Sorcerer to the Crown: Or Pride & Prejudice & Magic
Book, it's not you. It's me. This year I read several books that really helped me pin down what I do and do not enjoy in my reading. This book helped me realize that I really don't enjoy historical fiction. It's just a matter of taste. Cho really embraces regency fiction, and she nails it. Unfortuna...

The Royal Society of Unnatural Philosophers maintains the magic within His Majesty’s lands. But lately, the once proper institute has fallen into disgrace, naming an altogether unsuitable gentleman as their Sorcerer Royal and allowing England’s stores of magic to bleed dry. At his wit’s end, Zachar...

5.0 Sorcerer to the Crown - Zen Cho
This books has all the things I love. Except penguins and cats. It was blurbed by Novick, Leckie, Carriger, and Milan, among many others. If you've been looking for a fantasy Regency book with an intersectional way of telling the story, then this is the one. The prospect of more fills me with deligh...

4.5 So charming!
This book was not at all what I expected...but I enjoyed it a lot. I don't think the cover or blurbs actually capture this book very well. And I don't think my description would either. I put my thoughts earlier on some of what struck me and I enjoyed, and it's too much to put down all here.. So l...
