MY THOUGHTS

If you love hot and steamy with plenty of sex involving mafia men with dark and truly f*cked up women...this is totally your series.  Unfortunately for me, I think I'm just so over reading/listening to a book with more sexual encounters than plot.  This could have been a much more enjoyable listen for me because the backstory was there.  Basically, for me, It just could have been so much more than it was and I do believe that I'm done with this series after this book.  Thank goodness, I never requested any more of this series from Audiobook Boom for review.

The narration is really quite remarkable by Tracy Marks, her Boston-Irish accent is fairly well done.  Her voice is very distinctive though, and unfortunately, each new book with new characters sounds like the characters, Mac and Crow, from book #1.

MY THOUGHTS

The Audio was fairly good...she pulled off the annoying bunny dialogue really well, her Scottish accent felt a tad forced and awkward, but it's not in the story that much, so not too a big deal.

The first third of the story I was really into it, actually...but then somewhere around the middle, I got really confused and then it was like the story was floating up above my head somewhere...and only bits and pieces got through.  While I've never done a buddy or bookclub kind of read, I can see where a person would definitely benefit from someone(s) to bounce things off from while reading this.

Ultimately, I feel like I missed the boat on this one...like maybe somewhere in this f-ed up story was a thought-provoking narrative filled with allegory, satire and all those things that your teacher wanted you to convey in your stories.  But it was completely lost on me...It was kind of like one long-ass acid trip, and the bunnies...don't even get me started on the bunnies.

Oh, bunny...I love you bunny, your so pretty bunny...I love your dress bunny...

MY RATING 2.5STARS - GRADE= D+

MY THOUGHTS⇢

I wanted to like this, but it just never grabbed me, I liked the idea of the story more than the actual story. It had many elements including mechanical dragons, that never really came to life for me. Fantasy lovers who are tired of the same old cliched romance might like this because, while it has a splash of romance, it doesn't overshadow the story at all; and only comes into play towards the end.

I think the biggest reason I couldn't get into this was Emily Woo Zeller's narration. Her voices were altogether too whispery, gruff or high-pitched squeaky, like make your ears pop kind of squeaky. That is the reason I listened to this at a speed of 1.65. Which in turn made it difficult to follow the action scenes, although they could have been written in a way that was difficult to follow as well. Sadly, I just didn't care that much to find out.

๏ ๏ ๏ My Thoughts ๏ ๏ ๏

I really need to quit listening to books narrated by Justine Eyre because I really do not like her voice inflections/tonality or whatever you want to call it. I thought I could get past it, but I can't. If I finish this series, I need to wait about a year to do it, maybe then I can listen to her narration without cringing.

Overall, it's difficult for me to say how I feel about this second book, I was hoping the story would wow me enough and make the lack of good narrator unnecessary, unfortunately, it didn't do that. I didn't really find the content exciting until the last half hour of the book. Otherwise, I just found it boring. This series is well-loved by many, so my experience shouldn't influence you too much, other than to the skip the Audio, maybe. This is one that should be read.

๏ ๏ ๏  My Thoughts ๏ ๏ ๏

This book tried to have these compelling plot twists that just came off as somewhat ridiculous and hard to swallow, especially towards the last third of the book.  I was sort of feeling things until that point, and it just went downhill after that.  It felt, to me, that she was going for shock factor more than anything else.  The narration was very decently done, without that, I probably would have been super angry that I wasted my time on the story at all.
