Halloween Bingo 2016 - Book 11 (YA Horror)
A Certain Slant of Light - Laura Whitcomb

YA Horror : A Certain Slant of Light, Laura Whitcomb

"Their mother, in the wings, as often mothers and grandmothers are, ready to catch the children should they need saving, but otherwise invisible."

"I knew that she was trying to save her little girl, but sometimes mothers with best intentions kill their daughters all the same."

Two ghosts, James and Helen, find themselves living in the bodies of two troubled teens. Billy, a recovering drug addict, and Jenny, a bright young girl rebelling against her ultra-religious parents.

The concept is great, but the execution is a bit choppy. I'll probably pick up the sequel though.

Halloween Bingo 2016 - Young Adult Horror
A Certain Slant of Light - Laura Whitcomb

Someone was looking at me, a disturbing sensation if you're dead.

Now that's just the kind of opening sentence to suck you into a book.

Is there a prize for most books read without actually getting a bingo?
A Certain Slant of Light - Laura Whitcomb

Because I think I'll win it.

I'm dependent on what is available at the library for quite a few of my reads, and have had to put holds on some of them.

Got the email last night letting me know that my 'YA Horror' square is available for me to pick up, which means yet again, no bingo for me.

A Certain Slant of Light - Laura Whitcomb

This is my choice for the YA Horror bingo square. I loved the cover and the description intrigued me.

In the class of the high school English teacher she has been haunting, Helen feels them: for the first time in 130 years, human eyes are looking at her. They belong to a boy, a boy who has not seemed remarkable until now. And Helen—terrified, but intrigued—is drawn to him. The fact that he is in a body and she is not presents this unlikely couple with their first challenge. But as the lovers struggle to find a way to be together, they begin to discover the secrets of their former lives and of the young people they come to possess.

Magic in a Certain Slant of Light
Magic in a Certain Slant of Light - Deborah Coates Simple evocative language with just a hint of magic. This is Coates at her best. And this is a complete short story, not just an introduction to a longer novel. I would like to see more from these characters, but the story is complete.
