I really enjoy both the series Juliet Blackwell is currently publishing and this little novella combines the characters from both the Haunted Home Renovation and Witchcraft Series. So, really, it wasn't going to go wrong for me.
The author writes a mini-mystery complete with dead body and murder suspects. Calling it well-developed would be a lie, but I thought it was a great little story that combines the talents of Mel, with her ability to see and communicate with ghosts and Lily, a natural-born witch. The story is told from Mel's POV, but it's mostly Lily's cast of characters that are involved with the mystery.
The mystery involved dolls; life-sized mannequin like dolls that had a medium-high creep factor. Flashbacks to Secrets of the Shopping Mall and the Weeping Angel episode of Dr. Who gave the short story more of an edge for me although the short form factor was limiting. I can't imagine how freaking creepy this story line could have been in a full length novel where the author had time to setup the suspense and wind up the reader's tension, waiting for those damn dolls to do something.
There was at least one loose thread at the end of this story, and the storyline itself could have been smoother, but I don't go into these between-the-novels novellas with high expectations, so mostly the story delivered; it was fun, it was a little bit creepy, and I finally got to see two of my favorite cozy protagonists working together. I'd definitely welcome more of these cross-overs in the future - both in novella and novel length.
