Two short stories [Review]

Billy's Zombie by

23174938

13 page

A young boy decides to enact revenge on the people who he thinks do not like him by raising a zombie and you know the rest... (well, you know what zombies do at least.)

My review for this is simple: If only this had been at least novella length. I liked the story, but there just wasn't enough there to hook me. If it was better fleshed out, I would consider giving the author another chance.

The Legend of the Zombie by

14315620

32 pages

I would give the artwork 4 stars. I liked the art style a lot.

I started this thinking it was a comic book. It is sort of one, but more of a mixture of picture book/comic. There is more text than would be in a simple picture book. Age range doesn't matter for me as I'll read anything, but I have no idea who they were trying to publish this for. The artwork might grab a person's attention, but the words were too boring. It is presented as a fact book about where the term zombie came from, which could have been done in a really entertaining way.

[Here is an example of the artwork.]

I ended up giving both stories a 2/5.

I used Scribd (Billy's Zombie) and Amazon FreeTime Unlimted (The Legend of the Zombie) to read these. Both have free trials avalible!

I'm paying $8.99 for Scribd. Not bad! You can get 2 months free here: Trial

FreeTime is for the kids in the family, but I will read from it, too. Heck, I'm a big kid! $4.99 or $2.99 if you have Prime.

Guarded by L.A. Witt and Cat Grant (4 Stars)
Guarded - Cat Grant,L.A. Witt

Overall, I really enjoyed this story about a rock star and his bodyguard navigating a relationship in the midst of other issues. Unfortunately, there were a few issues that bothered me during the story and took my enjoyment down a notch. There were elements of BDSM, including breath play, whipping, and multiple partners, but it didn’t include a lot of discussion outside of a single safeword. Jordan and Jase were both fairly well-developed characters, but their relationship needed more dialogue to establish a more believable connection outside of sex. In addition to dealing with their own issues, they were also dealing with the drug addiction of Jordan’s best friend and band mate, Daniel. I liked the writing style of the two authors together.

Simple by SJD Peterson (4 Stars)

Brycen and John are insecure in their ability to have a relationship due to their past boyfriends. It’s unfortunate because both of them are very kind and compassionate people. What starts out as an incredible physical connection, quickly turns into an easy-going romance. Unfortunately, they can’t help but bring their prior issues into their current affair. The spent a lot of time having sex, interpreting words and actions incorrectly, and avoiding discussions.

Wes and Kit by Hollis Shiloh (4 Stars)
Wes and Kit (steampunk mystery gay romance) - Hollis Shiloh

Interesting and enjoyable characters meet under unfortunate circumstances and fall in love. Very sweet story romance with a mystery running in the background. I would have liked a bit more dialogue with Kit and Wes, but I still felt like I got to know them well enough to believe the connection. I really liked how the different issues with their hearts were presented. I also adored their spunky dog, Lolly, who always managed to make me smile. All sex takes place off-page, but there was plenty of cuddling. Although this couple gets their HEA, the mystery isn't resolved yet and continues in the next story which I will definitely be reading.

Amazon Unlimited

Updated to mention I got this through Amazon Unlimited. I have to remember to tag these.

Recommendations wanted: amazon prime and unlimited (the kindle editions)

Anyone have any kindle edition book recommendations for SF/Fantasy books just borrowable via kindle Unlimited (not also in prime lending library)? Recommendations for SF/Fantasy in both prime and Unlimited? Excluding Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Hunger Games books.

I'm asking partly because I need a reading list for (at least until group challenge features are added) two friend challenges starting in August if anyone would like an invite or would like to check out the reading lists. Those challenges are:

I'm also partly asking as a Leafmarks librarian who assumes many of those books will be amazon.com exclusive (so likely need to be added to the Leafmarks database).

In August-October, I'm likely going to do the 30-day trial for Kindle Unlimited (doubt I will continue as I already have a seldom-used-for-books prime membership and I'm not seeing a lot of differences other than amount borrowed at one time and longer borrow time. I don't listen to audiobooks.)
