Abandon - Blake Crouch
Abandon - Blake Crouch

Wind rips through the crags a thousand feet above, nothing moving in this godforsaken town, and the mule skinner knows that something is wrong.

- first sentence

Okay, so the first thing I need to say is that I loved the Wayward Pines series. I thought I would love anything by Crouch.

When I started reading this book, I thought there was going to be a supernatural element. I kept waiting for something that was never going to come.... because of this, I didn't like the book. Maybe if I had known what to expect, I would have appreciated the book more. To be fair, the summary on Amazon does kind hint towards a ghost/haunting.

Overall, it wasn't a bad book and I did learn a lot of new words - though I probably won't have an opportunity to use them in conversation any time soon.

Examples:

mochila - a Spanish word for knapsack

shabrack - a cavalry saddlecloth used in European armies

younker - youngster

scree - a mass of small loose stones that form or cover a slope

speleothem - structure formed in a cave by the deposition of minerals from water

slumgullion - cheap or insubstantial stew

The story goes back and forth between present time and a century ago (when the entire town disappeared). There is a lot of death and killing, but the reason is NOT supernatural, it's just old-fashioned greed. There is a man who thinks God talks to him and makes a terrible choice because of it, but there are no ghosts, no haunting. Oh well.

A Taste of Pleasure (Deliciously Dechamps, #2) by Chloe Blake
A Taste of Pleasure - Chloe Blake

Blake sets out to wet the palette with a flavorful blend spices. A Taste of Pleasure appeals to all the pieces that makes us human. An exotic location, a sizzling romance and a tasty canvas of heart that outshines the mouth watering foods that make up this bouffett of love. Danica set her sights on making her mark on the world. Her passion lies in the kitchen, yet her heart has her craving something more. Antonio comes with a bit of baggage, but he's all heart. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, because Danica and Antonio are the perfect recipe for love.

Girl Made of Stars Review
Girl Made of Stars - Ashley Herring Blake

This was okay. It only took me about an hour to read. I am of the very unpopular opinion for this book here because 95 percent of the reviews on here are 5 stars.

I'm not going to say much because it'll be getting a bit political if I do. I think this is one of those books that you have to read for yourself to see if you will like it. Most of my friends probably will. It does deal with some deep issues so make sure you have a full understanding of what this book is about before starting it.

Frostblood by Elly Blake-- Review
Frostblood (The Frostblood Saga) - Elly Blake

You can also find my review here: https://devouringbooks2017.wordpress.com/2018/06/06/frostblood-by-elly-blake-review/

This is a book that I passed up reading a bunch of times, but picked it up on a whim because the cover caught my eye and someone agreed to read it with me. I went in blind, only a reputation and cover, without reading a description. I also originally thought that this book was Frostfire by Amanda Hocking, who wrote the Trylle series, which I loved. I am glad that I stumbled across it because I really enjoyed it.

Frostblood moved at a really fast pace, which is an aspect that I really enjoy in novels. The world building was pretty cool. I found the descriptions of a few of the mystical beings to be quite vivid and they felt realistic. The origin story of frostbloods and firebloods was placed well in the beginning of the story, and didn’t feel like information dumping. The prophecy and plot were done very well.

I liked Ruby as a main character. She had quite a temper and wasn’t as innocent as most protagonists are. She flew off the handle when she was angry. While she gained control of her temper and powers throughout the novel and her character arc, she was still quite wild. I found her a bit different than other protagonists that I read about, which is refreshing because I read a lot of young adult fantasy novels.

The rising action and climax of the story weren’t delivered with as much intensity and build up as I preferred, but they were still done well. There was a good plot twist that I didn’t see coming at all. The romance was okay, but more of a secondary element. I didn’t really feel the heat of the relationship, but it was okay. I never had an opportunity to get bored, the action can’t be turning the pages. I would probably be willing to read the sequel, but I won’t be seeking it out. This is the first book that I read by Elly Blake, and it was pretty good

His to Protect: A Bachelor Bad Boys/Mast... His to Protect: A Bachelor Bad Boys/Masters and Mercenaries Novella - Carly Phillips,Lexi Blake

This novella is part of Lexi Blake's Crossover Collection from her Masters & Mercenaries series.  I have never read any of the books in the original series, but it is not needed to enjoy this story.

Talia Shaw is a scientist for a big pharmaceutical company and is working on a new formula that could change people's lives.  Imagine her surprise when someone tries to break into her lab.  Talia knows they are after her formula and she decides to hide and calls her brother.  He tells her to head to Shane Landon's house to hide, since he is a body guard.  Talia is hesitant to seek help from the one man she has always longed for, but at least she knows she can trust him.  As Talia shows up at Shane Landon's house, she is very surprised to catch him showering outside, and all naked!

Knowing that Shane needs to get Talia to safety, they have to swing by her apartment first to get her work that is safely hidden and then get her to her mentor who has the rest of the work.  Of course on the way they run into all kinds of trouble.

As Talia and Shane are spending more time together, things quickly heat up.  After an explosive, action packed ending, these two finally get their happy ending.  This was a fun, and quick moving story and both of the characters were really fun.
