Sometimes it's the things we want the most...
Stand In Place - Mary Calmes,Greg Boudreaux

That are the hardest things to keep...

There's a romance in this story and it's sweet and I enjoyed it a lot but what really captured my attention and my heart in this story was the other part of this story...the one about family.

'Family' is really such an abstract word. It holds different meanings for all of us. For me it's that group of people who are there for you no matter what, it's your shelter from the storm that can be the rest of the world...family it's unconditional love and acceptance...it's something that we all want but don't always get. So yeah, I could go on and on about how important...how special I think family is but I think I've made my point...family when it's the way it should be is magical.

Kaenon thought he had that special family until they threw him out but that was also when he learned that sometimes the family we have isn't the one we need and just like so many other things in life...families shift and change.

When Kaenon's family threw him out it was his grandparents and his aunt who were there to create an new family for him...to be the family that he needed to take him into adulthood and give him the love that he needed to go out into the world and make a life for himself...to leave Braxton, Texas and not return...until over a decade later when his grandmother...the last member of the family that saved him calls him home, to spend her final summer with her.

'Stand in Place' is set at the beginning of that summer and Kaenon's determined to spend that summer with his grandmother and then return to his home and the life he's made away from Braxton. What Kaenon doesn't realize is that his grandmother's plans for the summer don't include just sitting around waiting to die. Nope, grandma's determined to make sure that Kaenon's family once again shifts to make sure that the grandchild she helped raise isn't alone that he has a family to love him...to give him back the family that years ago failed him.

I have to admit I don't think I would have been as quick to forgive as Kaenon was especially towards his father and having brothers and sisters of my own I get why he might have been more willing to forgiving his brother and sister, I get how much he missed having them in his life.

There's a fine line being walked when someone is seeking/giving forgiveness...how soon is too soon? and at what point has it gone from giving forgiveness to handing out retribution? and those are questions that have to be determined by each person on an individual basis.

This story held a plethora of secondary characters that were all intriguing in their own right but most of all I was enchanted with Keanon's grandmother (Jo as she preferred to be called) this woman is the grandmother we all would love to have and she was delightful and not to forget Kaenon's love interest 'Brody'.

Brody was the high school football star, best friend to Kaenon's brother and Kaenon's had a crush on Brody that goes all the way back to high school...it's a crush that Kaenon doesn't realize has been reciprocated for years. But now that he's got a second chance Brody's not going to let Kaenon slip away without putting up a fight.

Last but not least there's Jo's garden...over the years it's gone to ruin and now Jo want's Brody to restore it to help bring it back to its former glory. There's so much symbolism to this garden. The connection that Kaenon's family holds to the land...the connection they hold to the community and so many other things. I enjoyed the potential sybolisms that are loosely woven into the is part of the story allowing the reader to put their own interpretation on them.

Ok, so by now it's pretty obvious that for me this story just worked and I really enjoyed it, but I need to add that this was also due in no small part to the wonderful narration provided by Greg Boudreaux. I have no doubt in my mind that when I do my annual... semi-annual...quarterly...re-listen of my Mary Calmes audio collection, this one will be on my list...I don't have them all if her books on audio but I'm working on it!

Audiobook Review for Sex, Lies, and Headlines
Sex, Lies, and Headlines - Peter Styles

Simon had one night with the man of his dreams.  Knowing he will never see him again, he tried the number given only to find it fake.  Jokes on both of us, what we felt was real.

Luke has thought of nothing else in the six years since he had Simon all to himself.  He is saddened by the fact Simon never called him.  Living a life in the public eye, he feels lonely and that he can never trust anyone completely.

This story was very gripping.  A tale of two souls who should have been together and lost so much time.  I was seriously caught right away and had to know the end.  Lucky for me, the story was no too long to listen to and was a real challenge for each character.

The narration was done well and the obvious inflections helped to know the person changes.  The tonal quality overall was good and it ended well for me.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

'Love's Magic' is the story of how 1 event touches 4 lives, leaving them forever altered...
Love's Magic - Janice Jarrell,Walker Williams

From the bigger picture issue of sexual assault and violent crimes in the setting of academia, Janice Jarrell takes us into the lives of four men, giving us a very up close and personal look at how one act of violence touches their lives...bringing them together, driving them apart, making each man look more closely at what he has, what he could loose and ultimately what he's willing to do to keep it.

'Love's Magic' isn't an epic or grand action or romance story, but rather it's a story about how one event unfolded to touch the lives of four men.  We begin with David and Nate, who are in a committed relationship at the start of the story and we follow them as they each struggle to deal with Nate's attack. While each man's reaction to events is distinctly different their love for each other and their desire not to give up on the relationship that means so much to them remains strong within their hearts. It's going to take a lot of introspection on both of their parts to find their way back to each other.

When Professor David Gardener gets a call telling him that Professor Nate Reese, the man he lives with and loves more than life itself has been seriously injured preventing the assault of one of the college's students all he can think about is getting to his lover. What neither David nor Nate could possibly foretell was how much their lives and the lives of those around them would be affected.

As the reader, or in this case the listener, follows David and Nate, while each man deals with the effects of Nate's attack in their own way we are introduced to a number of secondary characters and while our look at the effects on their lives isn't as in depth as that of David and Nate it is undeniably present from the strain it creates between David and his fellow professors to the bond that forms between Nate and the guardian of the student he rescued to how it draws Sergeant Colin Campbell from the campus police  and Dr. Joshua Abrams, the colleges Title IX Consultant, together...ultimately becoming the catalyst that pushes them apart leaving Colin on his own to deal with the memory of events from his past that could keep him from having the future that in his heart he knows he wants with Joshua.

Ms Jarrell has created four characters that are all very likable and by the end of this story I was a fan of all four men...each of them containing their own admirable traits and imperfections...making all of them seem not just human but so very likable and real. While the focus of the story is David and Nate along with Colin and Joshua the author also weaves other characters into the story giving a more thorough and well rounded picture of the story's events along with who and how their lives were touched. At the end of it all we are essentially given David and Joshua's story with a solid HEA and we are left with Colin and Joshua in a good place.

If you’re looking for a steamy, sex fixes everything story than I have to admit you’re probably going to be disappointed. That’s not to say that there aren’t any sexy times here but the sex in this one is very much a part of the relationships and often times almost fade to black and not a driving force of the story. This ones definitely more plot driven than sex dependent and if you’re a fan of stories where it take more than some dazzling sex for the MCs to be able to overcome obstacles and get their lives on track than I think maybe like me, you won’t be disappointed.

I'm not really sure what I was expecting when I started this one but what I got was a story that drew me in, was compelling, realistic and told with very believable characters and was narrated by new to me narrator Walker Williams, who did a superb job of giving added depth and emotion to both the story and the characters while bringing them to life. While his overall narration was enjoyable for me his voices for David, Nate, Colin and Joshua connected incredibly well with each of the characters and meshed perfectly with the images that I had in my mind. So in the end what I was given was a story that I loved and that I’m looking forward to continuing with more of in regards to Colin and Joshua but if David and Nate turn up from time to time you can be sure that this listener/reader will be doing a bit of a happy dance.

About Accidentally in Love:

Arya

I know I can make you blush.

It’s a weird claim to fame, but a perk of my dream job: being the voice of your favorite romance audio books. Laughter, hijinks, adventure. Passion. Sweet heaven, the passion. It’s everything I could ever want. Except…
The problem with this fabulous life?

It’s all just fantasy.

Picking between Chinese and Thai delivery doesn’t count as adventure.
The bestie who always makes me laugh is thousands of miles away.
As for the hunky hero? It’s not like he’s just going to come crashing into my apartment.

Until the night a bearded stranger does exactly that…

Gavin

Do the job. Get the bad guy. Go home.

Most importantly, don’t get involved.

Those are the rules. The agency’s and mine. And they work. Even better, they give me the perfect excuse to keep my distance.
The perfect escape from getting burned again. Except…

Why can’t I stop watching her?
I shouldn’t care more about what she’s doing than my target.
I shouldn’t let her distract me from the job.
And I sure as hell shouldn’t fantasize about a woman I’ll never meet.

That is, until the night I surprise us both by kicking down her apartment door. Rules or no rules, it's true that...

After all, 425 Madison Avenue is the perfect place to fall in love.

*Each story is completely standalone.

“Number one rule of tailing someone: don’t breathe so loud they can hear you five flights away.”

“Hey!” I say, thwacking his chest. “Don’t be a jerk. Besides, I don’t think you’re in the position to give spy tips right now.”

One bold eyebrow lifts in question.

Pushing out of his grasp, I whip the hat off my head, breathing in relief as cool air hits my skull. “Isn’t the number one rule of spying not to pick up a tail in the first place?”

The first eyebrow drops, followed by the other. Green eyes turn sharp, primitive, before brightening. A roar of laughter erupts from his chest. We stand there for who knows how long, me huffing and puffing, and Gavin laughing like I’ve just delivered the funniest one-liner he’s ever heard. When he stops, his chest is heaving as hard as mine. One last chuckle escapes when he clocks my annoyed expression.

“Oh, come on. You should be proud. It’s been forever since I laughed that hard. That alone should make up for giving yourself away. Besides, it was a good effort. For a first timer.”

“Ugh,” is the only answer that seems fitting. “When did you realize I was there?”

“Hmm,” he says, stroking his beard, his lips still twisted in a smirk. “Down in the alley. When you scraped that thing against the wall.” He points at the metal tip on the large umbrella.

“You heard that?”

“Hmm,” he repeats, head bobbing. “That and a lot more.” Gavin sweeps his eyes down my body, lingering on my boots before pivoting and heading down the hall.

“Wait, what else?” Keeping up is impossible, what with my thigh muscles screaming and pain scorching my foot. He slows his pace without glancing back, his strides shortening until I catch up.
Another step and another wince, and Gavin mutters something under his breath before lifting me off my feet. My own smirk turns to a shriek when he throws me over his shoulder and swats my butt before continuing down the hall.

“That was completely unnecessary.” My complaint lacks edge, which I blame on the view of his very fine ass.

“Quite the opposite, Ms. Winters. Consider it punishment for ignoring my warnings about staying away.”

About Katy Ames:

Katy Ames has spent most of her life on the East Coast and hopes to spend more of it in the UK, primarily so she can indulge in her serious plaid obsession. There isn’t a teenage drama or a period British TV show she hasn’t binge-watched at least twice. And she can be persuaded to do almost anything with the promise of bourbon, chocolate, or a nap (not necessarily in that order).

Katy is mom to a small human who has an obscene amount of energy and a blissful ability to ignore swear words, and wife to a man whose reading habits are far too serious. Katy and her family reside in Washington, D.C., a city she where never intended to live and loves so much she’d be happy to talk about it for hours. Just ask.

It's been quite a while...
Clockwork Tangerine - Rhys Ford,Greg Tremblay

...since I read this story and revisiting it through the narrations of Greg Tremblay was as always purely delightful. This one's short at just over 2 hours but if you like steampunk and a slow burn with just a bit of steamy smexy times check it out. It's an enjoyable way to pass a bit of time. Definitely recommended.
