I've read Everblue, the first book in the series quite a long time ago and remembered really enjoying it. I finally decided to buy Evergreen for my Kindle and I picked it up last month because I was on holiday and I only had one physical book with me that I finished in the train before arriving (yay me! I thought I would buy books there but had no time to do shopping)

In the end, I was quite disappointed by this book. I think the thing I really liked about Everblue was Natatoria, the mermaid's world, but most of this book takes place on earth and not in the ocean so it was a disappointment for me. I also really did no like Ash, I've just re-read my review of the first book where I said I liked her... (but it was in 2015 so I've changed a lot since then).

Anyway, it was not bad but I could not stay focused and was easily distracted. The characters were a bit annoying and I was not a huge fan of the Manichaeism, it was way too pronounced in my opinion.

I still recommend this book to younger reader because I think it could work better for them!

I'm not having much luck with books lately. The last couple of young adult books I've started just haven't managed to grab my attention at all and I've DNF'd them. This one included.

It didn't pull me in and make me want to forget everything else. The characters weren't in my face real and the continual chapter/character changes got a little annoying after a while. The underwater world held no appeal for me while I was more bothered about what was going on with Ashlyn above ground and then I'd read some and kinda lose interest in that but too.

I could really do with a book that's going to pull me in completely.

This was one of the first freebies I picked up for my Kindle a couple of years ago. I have so many freebies I got and have never got round to reading them, so I now have a policy if I can make it past the first 10-15% its a keeper. Review will contain some ranty spoilers.

The first 10-15% wasn't actually that bad. The main character was as dull as dry toast but the writing was okay, no obvious glaring typos or anything. Then after that it rapidly went down hill. It had the biggest YA cliche of all - a missing parent. Insta-love. A stupid heroine. And fast became a Twilight rip off.

To be fair, though, the love interest Nicholas was actually a fairly interesting character. In spite of the old "I'm watching over you to protect you but I'm really dangerous you don't want to get involved with me". While the sensible part of my brain is screaming THIS IS STALKERY AND WRONG ON SO MANY LEVELS!!! I can actually see the appeal of having someone strong and handsome and other worldly looking out for you.

After the scene in the cave I was pretty much done. I skimmed the rest. The main character Julia was just so...bland and dull.

Plus is takes so long for things to start happening it was boring. And still falls along the line of in spite of obvious danger Julia does dumb things and continues to be obsessively in love with Nicholas. Who went from being mildly interesting to dull and annoying by this point.  After the cliff/caves thing I was done. I skimmed the rest. And deleted it from my kindle.

Not a series I will be continuing.
