Review ~ Awesome!
Broken Dawn - Dianne Duvall

Book source ~ Purchased (also was a review request, but I forgot I had already pre-ordered it)

Nick Belanger has the hots for his next door neighbor, Kayla Dorman. He’d ask her out and hope she says yes, except he’s an Immortal Guardian and his life is all about killing vampires to protect the humans who are unaware of what goes bump in the night. Not only is he something she would find hard to believe, but she has a daughter he doesn’t want to put in danger. Well, he doesn’t want to put either one in danger, but now that the biggest threat in his world has been eliminated and her daughter is off to college, maybe he could tell her about his feelings. Maybe?

Kayla has always had the hots for Nick, but he’s a handsome single guy and she’s a single mom.  Plus, he’s never shown any interest in her so she accepts and enjoys his friendship over the years. Their relationship is suddenly redefined after a near tragedy and Kayla is thrown into his world. What was once hands off becomes all hands on deck as the two really get to know each other. But a new danger is lurking in their Texas city and Nick will need to call in the Immortal Guardians from North Carolina when the shit hits the fan.

Anyone who has been following me over the years knows how much I love the Immortal Guardians. I devour each book as soon as it comes out. And now there’s a spinoff series called the Aldebarian Alliance that is just as yummy to nom on. Broken Dawn does a good job of standing alone even though it is the 10th book in the series. You can read it and not be lost if you haven’t read the books that came before. However, I don’t know why anyone would want to miss out on so many books with awesome characters, kickass action, snappy dialogue, humor, hot sexiness, and paranormal wonders. Why would you do that to yourself? No, I asked you a question. WHY?! Go sit in a corner and think about that.

Seriously, if you love your paranormal romance with lots of action, humor, multi-layered characters, and hot naked time set in a well-developed world then look no further.

Brennender Fels // The Obelisk Gate!!!
Brennender Fels - N.K. Jemisin

german and english review

audible audiobook

***

Summary: This is the way the world ends... for the last time.

The season of endings grows darker as civilization fades into the long cold night. Alabaster Tenring – madman, world-crusher, savior – has returned with a mission: to train his successor, Essun, and thus seal the fate of the Stillness forever.

It continues with a lost daughter, found by the enemy.

It continues with the obelisks, and an ancient mystery converging on answers at last.

The Stillness is the wall which stands against the flow of tradition, the spark of hope long buried under the thickening ashfall. And it will not be broken.

My review: Not as good as the first book but I still enjoyed it!!!

The first book confused me so many times, still I was totally into the whole things. The second book confused me just as much, somehow I managed to finish the book much quicker.

The story and the world it is set in, is still one of the greatest I have enjoyed in a while. Even though sometimes we got way too much information dumped on us.

The characters; I just really like how layered they are.

I think as soon as I get a chance to listen to the third book in the series, I have to relisten to the whole thing. Maybe this will get rid off all my confusion LOL

She Has A Broken Heart Where Her Heart Should Be
She has a Broken Thing where her Heart should be - J.D. Barker

by R.J. Barker

This one starts out a little 'bitty', with quotes and false starts before the prologue, which itself is separated in time from the story that begins in chapter one.

To be honest, it was a slog. I wanted to DNF it every time I picked it up. It seemed to have trouble deciding what genre it is and the overlay of Dickens' Great Expectations (one of my favourite stories of all time) didn't really work. It felt very contrived and I would have given up when Miss/Mrs Oliver gave Jack her speech in the graveyard except that I always finish books I've requested from Netgalley, even when they're painful.

The sentence structure was fine, the problems were in dialogue and plot. The sort of scifi sequences with some mysterious entity observing could have been left out altogether and improved the story as well as shaving off some over long filler.

The characters themselves, while not evoking sympathy, were at least defined personalities but Jack himself was pretty wet and the naming of many of them again I felt insulted Dickens. Still, the book seems to have a lot of good reviews so maybe it just has its audience.

Dorm Room 210
Dorm Room 210 - Broken_Dream07 No plot, no grammar, no clichés, no secrets, no hate-to-love, nothing. I realised I just read a book about absolutely nothing. It’s like just random facts about the characters thrown together and then some scenes that come out of nowhere and don’t lead anywhere.
I don’t like writing just negative reviews but I can’t find a single positive thing about this book.

[I read the 2nd revised version of this story published on Wattpad and I have a question. How do you revise something and, in the end, it still has so many grammar and spelling errors that sometimes you can’t understand what’s going on?]

Jag's running, he's not planning on stopping but...
Broken - Colette Davison,Piers Ryman

He's getting tired and when the sexy owner of the club he's working at shows an interest in him...one that Jag returns, he may not be willing to stop but maybe...just maybe, he could slow down for a while.

Michael's been on his own since loosing Edward the love of his life. Not that he hasn't tried but the right person just doesn't seem to be there for him...not until Jag. Jag may be young but he's had to endure his own heartaches and pain making him a lot wiser than someone of his years should be. Jag's not looking for a relationship but a bit of no strings attached sex with the attractive older club owner would suit him just fine as long as none of the rules get broken because Jag's rules are what keep him safe.

Overall, I liked Jag and Michael together. Given Jag's past he needed someone who had the maturity to be patient and understand that while Jag wasn't totally broken, it's still going to take him some time to get regain a healthy out look about the world and himself. But in spite of what he'd been through Jag was also able to help Michael find a better out look when it came to the loss of Edward. Not only did he help Michael see that it was ok to grieve but that it was ok for him to still love Edward even though he was moving on and had found room in his heart to love Jag too.

In some ways 'Broken' was a bit out of the ordinary in terms of a book with this type of setting. I was expecting some background to be laid with other characters such as some of the dancers and even the punters (Brit speak for 'customers) but for the most part things were confined to Jag, Michael, Michael's best friend Matt and his partner and even their on page inclusion was very limited. While this worked in some ways in others I felt like the characters were a bit flat. I like it when I get to see interaction between not just the MCs but with other secondary characters and I found it strange that there really wasn't any. I mean really Michael's a bar owner and there was never really a conversation between him and any of his employees other than Matt or Jag or any of the customers. The same with Jag we got to see him talking to Michael and Matt that's it. We were told that he talked to other dancers but we never got the conversations. I'm not saying that there needed to be a lot of talk between Michael and/or Jag and other people just that some would have seemed a bit more natural.

And before I forget just one itsy, bitsy note about Jag's parents...these are the poster parents for how not to parent...basic rule of thumb people if your kid's first instinct is to run from you. You're definitely doing things wrong...I'mma just sayin'.

Minor niggle aside I enjoyed listening to the audio book for this story. Piers Ryman was the narrator and while he is a new to me narrator, I do have a couple more books narrated by him on my audio book shelf that I'm looking forward to enjoying soon and one of them might just happen to be the second book in 'The Heaven and Hell Club' so who know's with any luck we'll get to see more Michael and Jag giving their characters a chance to develop more depth. I'd like top see how things progress between these two now that Jag's decided to stop hiding from his parents and stay in one place to make a life for himself.

Maybe not a Canada Day fireworks start for this series but definitely solid enough that I'm curious enough to stick around to see what's coming next and then as with every new series I'll see where things go from there.
