Frustrating
Slow Burn - A.K. MacBride

This is book #2 in the Breathing Hearts series.  This book can be read as a standalone novel.  To understand the series, and to avoid spoilers, I recommend reading this series in order.

Maddie got a first impression of the new neighbor.  Hint: It was not a good one. He was flat out rude. He was also hot as hell.  If she can get her mind of that magnificent tattooed bod, thinks may start looking up.

Adam misses his old life.  Moving to make a change, he left behind parents, career and everything that was familiar.  Now he has a neighbor with a dog who won't leave him alone.  Would be easier if he could ignore them both.

Between fighting the attraction and fighting one another, the sparks just literally continue to fly.  The heat is raring hot and the characters are intriguing.  I liked the pace and the story was a great read.  I give this a 4/5 Kitty's Paws UP!

The Wood Burn Book
The Wood Burn Book - Rachel Strauss

by Rachel Strauss

This is a short and basic book about the art of woodburning. It starts with information on safety, which is good, then goes over tools, techniques, ways to add colour and finishes. It mentions different material a pyrography tool can be used on besides wood, including canvas which was a surprise!

The book does provide patterns to follow, but there is a section on project ideas and it does tell how to transfer patterns. Anyone can Google graphic designs and line drawings that can work well.

It does go into how to add texture, but I didn't see a lot on using different line sizes to add shading and other expert techniques. I'd say this is one for the beginner.

Cibola Burn by James S A Corey
Cibola Burn (Expanse) - James S.A. Corey

Series: The Expanse #4

The author duo that brought you vomit zombies now offers death slugs. I was warned that this wasn’t the greatest in the series, but overall I thought it was alright although I didn’t entirely buy Murtry’s motivations. It almost lost me at a couple other points too, but recovered.

Rick Gullotti lives the good life. He fights fires, dates beautiful women - though none long enough so she casts wistful glances at jewelry stores - and has great friends. And thanks to helping out the elderly couple who own his building, his rent is low. But when concerns about their health lead him to contact their only son, his life starts getting away from him.

Jessica Broussard has no interest in leaving sunny San Diego or her cushy corner office for Boston, but her father - who happens to be her boss - dispatches her to deal with the grandparents she's never met. She's unprepared for the frigid winter, loving relatives who aren't the monsters she's been led to believe, and the hot, scruffy firefighter who lives upstairs.

At first Jessica is determined to get back to her comfortable life as quickly as possible. All she has to do is talk her grandparents into selling their monstrosity of a house and moving to a retirement community. But she underestimates Rick's dedication - and his considerable charm. Nobody's taking advantage of his friends on his watch, even if that makes the tempting Southern California girl with the long legs his adversary. Unfortunately for them both, the only thing more urgent than the matter at hand is their sizzling chemistry, and it's quickly becoming too strong to resist.

Sexy Yummy Firefighters!!

Controlled Burn is book two in the Boston Fire series by Shannon Stacey and narrated by Tatiana Sokolov.

I relished this audiobook. It’s a sweet light-hearted romance with almost no drama. This novel worked for me on so many levels. It’s easy and fun, but I really liked was the mature romance in that our leads are in their late 30’s early 40’s.

Jessica is a VP of Financial Services at her father’s company. She’s never meet her grandparents on her fathers side. For some reason her father cut them out of his life and hers. After receiving a call from her grandfathers doctor she decides to go meet them and help them out, but her plans and life soon change once she meets them and their tenant Rick.

Rick is our sexy firefighter and such a sweet man. He’s taken such good care of the Brussard’s that he’s pretty much family. The son they never had. He looks out for them and makes sure their property is taken care of.

I adored Rick and Jessica. They are likable, relatable, realistic, kind and down to earth. You can tell at the beginning that they don’t trust each others motives, but as time moves along they see that both want what’s best for the elderly couple.

As for the romance. It’s a nice sweet build up with lots of sexual tension, flirting, and stolen kisses. They both fight this attraction and they keep thinking how can this work when they live miles away.

The only complaint I have is the end. It just ends and left me with some question’s.

Narration: Tatiana Sokolov did a superb job in her narration. All the voices where distinctive and she brought out the romance and realistic life of our characters.

Controlled Burn was a feel good romance. I can’t wait to listen on in the Boston Fire series.

LaCrosse's Good Deed Goes Very Punished
Burn Me Deadly - Alex Bledsoe,Stefan Rudnicki

One night, riding outside of town on a routine job Eddie LaCrosse comes across a woman in pretty rough shape. She's naked, bruised, cut and burned—many of the burns look skillfully inflicted, as are all the rest of her injuries. Whoever worked her over knew what he was doing. A damsel in a lot of distress and after a brief conversation, Eddie offers to help her get away from whoever did this and protect her.

Then he's struck from behind and wakes up as someone's captive—she's there, too. Not long after that, he wakes up again, at the bottom of a cliff, barely alive. The damsel didn't fare that well. Once he's patched up well enough to move and think, Eddie sets out to find out who she was, who killed her—and nearly him—and get a little revenge.

His search puts him in the way of one of the strongest criminal figures in his neck of the woods (a man that Eddie would've been happy never to have crossed paths with) and a government official trying to stop his investigation. Then an old friend of Eddie's is killed, and that may be related to his case. Which sends him off into several other directions—including a new dragon-worshiping cult that's somehow tied to the crime boss.

Eddie scoffs at the idea behind this cult—who, in his enlightened age, still believes in dragons? Eddie's skepticism (that word's too mild, but I can't come up with a better one) seems out of place for someone reader know has known both a deity and a man who has lived centuries. Whether or not he's right to disbelieve, the worshipers seem more than a little out to lunch, and are clearly easily manipulated.

There are a few good fight scenes, some good character growth and development since the last book (noteworthy because Eddie seemed to be dead-set against growth and development at the beginning of that novel). Liz, the courier we met at the very end of the first novel, is still around and is a huge part of Eddie's life. We get a taste of that, but not as much as I'd have liked (for good reasons, I should add, I'm not saying that Bledsoe wasted her).

I think this might be a better novel than The Sword-Edged Blonde—the story's a bit tighter, Eddie doesn't engage in any casual cruelty, the characters are better developed (just a bit). But I don't like it as much (each of the three or so times I've worked through the). There's a missing je ne sais quoi to this, however, that restrains my enthusiasm. Do I recommend it on its own merits? Yeah. Do I recommend it as a necessary installment in this series? Definitely—read them all.

I've only re-read the first two novels up to this point, when I move on to book three in a month or so, it'll be the first time I revisit it, and I'm really looking forward to that. It's possibly the best of the series—at the least, I remember it being a step above this.
