Letters Vol. II, Charles Darwin
More Letters of Charles Darwin, Vol 2 - Francis Darwin,Charles Darwin

I think your reaction to this book will be heavily dependent on your interest in and background knowledge of geology and botany. Almost the entire main text is made up of letters dealing with technical debates in these two broad fields and a good grounding is required in order to understand even what the questions under discussion are. For me, the geology was within my grasp and the botany was not and I ended up skipping most of the latter. Those hoping for insight into Darwin's character would certainly be better off reading only the first volume of letters.

Ok, I caved in and skipped the remaining botany - now there's fewer than 10p remaining, mainly about vivisection.

The fact that I only have dim memories of sexual reproduction in plants and the relevant anatomy from school ~3.5 decades ago as background is making the botany section a bit of a challenge - might have to do some web-based revision!

A mention of a "reviewer" made me wonder exactly  when peer review became standard practice in science.

My lack of appropriate background knowledge makes the letters about botany much less tractable than ones about geology or evolution where I have a decent grounding.
