Well this is it … the last book. A bitter sweet good bye to a great series that I loved so much.

Of course being the last book in the series it is hard to review without spoiling it but I will try and make it short and to the point.

We start off with Charley still being banished but shortly in, she gets freed and we get a steamy welcome home with Reyes. He informs her shortly after what is happening and they have limited to save the world, but like all the previous book that is not enough so Charley gets a few more things to deal with, including a possible serial murder on the loose.   In order to solve one mystery she must find out what really happened the night she was born and we soon discover that there is a lot we didn’t know.

To be honest it did not feel like the last book until we get three quarters into the book. It just feels like most of the previous books and we get her and her gang together working on saving the world once again…

Likewise with humor, we get plenty of humor throughout the book even being one of the darker or scarier books in the series and let’s not forget the romance that plays a part of it.

About at the 75% into the book we start to get the, this is it, this is the final book vibe. It is do or die time, literally.   Also this is full of surprises, some of the BIGGEST twists are happening in this book. There were moments I was crying and then like …”wait … what?!?!” a minute later. Even after finishing the book I still was not over some of the surprises or shocks I should say we learned.

Everything gets tied up in its very own fitting way, depending on who or what….

I shed plenty of tears reading this book, some happy tears others not so much but overall I was happy and satisfied with how it ended …… even though the last line of the book about drove me …. Crazy.

I will miss Charley and crew so much and still am sad this is the final book, but I hope we will see them again sometime in maybe novella or maybe even a spin off.  

Overall, I really loved this book and thought it was a great ending to an even better series. Farewell my friends, I will miss you….

This book was awful. I can't even with it. The writing wasn't great. The main character Charley is just painful. The other characters were painful. There were too many things happening and at the end we get a ridiculous reveal about someone that Charley has become obsessed with.

You would think a story about the Grim Reaper would be exciting. You would be wrong. 

Charley Davidson is a Grim Reaper. She can see dead people (sorry had to do it). Working with her father and uncle they have a private investigations business. Charley and her family are looking into three people who were murdered and at the same time Charley is having dreams of someone named Reyes who she feels connected to. 

Charley is a mess. She's obsessed with a teen boy she saw years ago named Reyes. She has a terrible relationship with her stepmother and stepsister. Her father seems oblivious to their bad relationship. The only bright spot is her friendship with Cookie so she does have someone in her corner.

The secondary characters are not great though. I didn't like the stepmother or stepsister. Reyes is garbage. There's a character named Garrett that sucked. The three dead people were cool as was Charley's dead assistant Angel. Honestly if the Reyes stuff had been cut this book would have worked better. 

The writing was awful. The flow was awful. There was just information dumps all over the place. We get a scene where Charley is threatened by rape with her supposed love interest, and then he attempts to do so, while her sister is standing there. Yeah. And she still is obsessed with him through the whole book and I could not see it.

The world building was a mess. I can't even follow what was happening half the time because even though Charley was supposed to be investigating three murdersm she gets obsessed with Reyes and the whole book just flails.

The ending was a mess. I'm not going to read another book in this series. Way too many things for me to overlook. 

I was also told Reyes is in all the books in this series and nah. I mean I wasn't going to read this series anyway, but I'm over romance novels where the hero acts like this and the heroine swoons.

If I had only one word to describe this book, I would have to go with unpredictable but luckily I have more than one word because this book is worth many more. The unpredictable word is very fitting because there are many twists and turns and a conclusion that will knock your socks off because I sure didn’t see that one coming. I have to admit that for the majority of the book I didn’t see how Charley could possible come out on top of the latest troubles in her world which kept me glued to the pages as Charley and all the other wonderful characters set about not only saving the world but also saving Charley’s family.

It is a bit of a roller coaster ride with lots of hair raising thrills and chills and of course snarky dialogue that catches you unaware and startles a laugh out of you because of Charley’s unique view of the world and how everyone fits in it. This book doesn’t have a lot of romance scenes but hey how much more romantic can it be when one has to save the love of her life from certain death.

Once again, Darynda Jones has written a funny but electrifyingly exciting book that readers can’t put down and I can’t wait to find out what happens next in Charley’s world. One last thing, for those of you who have not read the previous books, then you could become a bit lost because you missed the events that let up to this point and also because Charley’s penchant for renaming people and things may throw you off somewhat besides you would be missing out on Charley’s fun, thrilling adventure of a life.

This whole grim reaper thing should have come with a manual.
Or a diagram of some kind.

A flow chart would have been nice.

Charley Davidson’s character seems to have her life together, she’s a private investigator who consults with cops occasionally but she also has a secret side; she’s the grim reaper and unfortunately while she knows a little, there seems to be a whole lot that she doesn’t know about which adds a lot of intrigue but also makes her character vulnerable and one that readers can relate to. She has a snarky attitude and she’s full of pizazz which readers can’t help but like. The story hints at some hot and heavy chemistry with a shadow character that Charley’s not real sure is even real which adds even more suspense to a story that already has plenty and then there are a bunch of secondary characters that are every bit as fascinating as Charley who add quirkiness, laughs and drama.

An original storyline that hooks readers from the get go and the intrigue just keeps coming with twists and turns that keep readers on the edge of their seats and unable to put the book down.  A bit of mystery, a bit of action, well-written characters and quite a bit of dramatic interaction plays a big part in this book, add in a few laughs and readers never have dull moment.

Overall, the author does a fantastic job of engaging the readers with the multiple sub-plots, wonderful characters and a series opener that promises a phenomenally great time and I am looking forward to reading more of Charley’s adventures. Did I mention that I really love her name?
