Great Story and Characters
Something to Howl About - Christine Warren

Annie was in the lobby of Alpha, Washington’s town hall. Annie had been living out of two battered suitcases for the last three years.Annie was a wolf shifter and had been banished from her pack as she had placed her pack in danger because of her carelessness with her work previously.  Alpha-often called Alphaville by the shifters- was an infamous enclave in the Cascade Mountain range. Annie was there to see the mayor- John Jaeger. Jonas asked Jaeger what he knew about Annie. Jonas and John were the oldest of friends. Annie was a doctor and she had a handful of master degrees and a bunch of letters after her name. Jonas needs Annie to save his bear clan. Annie was also a certified genius in genetics, shifter biology, and biochemistry. Everyone John/Jaeger had spoken to has said she was the best hope Jonas had. Jonas ran his family's company - Browning Industries- he was also alpha of his clan and known as the playboy of the shifter community , he was also billionaire.. Annie freaked some when she seen Grahams name on her cellphone. He was someone she had known all her life. He was her cousin, her playmate, and her Alpha. If she did the favor John asked her banishment would be lifted. Annie hadn’t tried to settle down anywhere as she knew New York was home. Annie instantly noticed the other man in the mayor’s office. All Annie senses were focused on the stranger although through her force of will she still gazed at Mayor Jaeger. The bears scent struck her as pleasant unexpectedly as Mayor Jaeger introduced her to Jonas.  Annie’s wolf said Jonas was theirs in her head. As Jonas turned his attention and said he needed her help to save his clan. Jonas realized before he turned to meet Annie his wolf wanted to taste her. Jonas had never had such an immediate reaction to a woman before or rather his bear who usually had no interest in the women in Jonas’s life. Annie Cryer wasn’t Jonas’s type but his bear didn’t care. Jonas told her the women in his clan have been unable to have children. They can’t conceive several had been trying for years. They’d even tried medical specialists and went through several different treatments that had all failed. If they didn't find the root of this problem Jonas was afraid he would have no bears left. The numbers of the brown bears had been declining for at least five generations or about one hundred and fifty years. Annie was given an unused office in the medical center Dr. Doug Kirby told her she could use the lab also. When the doctor left Annie and Jonas alone in the office he kisses her. Even though Annie didn’t want to hear it her wolf knew Jonas was their mate. Than Jonas went on about how bears didn’t mate like wolves. By the time he managed to shut himself up Annie was furious and left. Than she called her best friend Sam back in NY at her pack. They had grown up together and been best friends since they were four years old.  and she hadn’t even known Sam had a baby. But graham had told Annie she wasn’t even to talk to anyone in his pack Sam got mad at that as they hadn’t talked for three years. But to her shock Annie no longer missed the Silverback pack like she had the last couple of years. Jonas’s mom went to see him and ask him what was wrong she than told him brown bears did have mates. Jonas and Annie felt like they were individually going crazy as they were mates and hadn’t seen each other in seven days.

I loved this book and it was a quick easy read. I read this in one setting. I loved the plot and pace. I loved how Jonas's mom made him feel like a pup again and she also set him straight about mates. I loved Jonas and Annie together and how they interacted with each other. I couldn’t find anything to criticize in this book - happily. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I highly recommend it.

Hard to Handle (Gargoyles #5) by Christine Warren
Hard to Handle (Gargoyles Series) - Christine Warren
Like her brothers before her, Ash bursts to life immediately aware that something has gone terribly wrong in the world and that this is why she has been summoned. Normally, when a Guardian awakens, a Warden is present to inform of them about what the danger is and to help formulate a plan to keep the Seven in check. Like her brothers before her, Ash must deal with the fact that her newly minted Warden doesn't have the slightest clue about what is going on, or even that he is a person of power. With a threat looming, Ash barely has time to think about the ramifications that she is the first female Guardian ever and that she is developing feelings for Michael. The fate of the world is at risk and Ash and Michael are simply unprepared to meet it.

Unlike the other books in this series, Warren tried to infuse a little more humour into the story. Anyone who has siblings and has retained a close relationship with them into adulthood should be able to see themselves reflected. Sure, Michael and his four sister are all adults now and are living active and busy lives but that doesn't mean they won't rat each other to their mother or engage in puerile games to get what they want. At times, this approach had me laughing and thinking about my own younger brothers.

As a male love interest Michael was as crotchity as an old man. I understand that he would have been overwhelmed by a honest to goodness gargoyle coming to life and learning that the forces of evil were aligning but the way that he treated Ash throughout the novel was truly disturbing.  I don't think that Michael actually ever moved past sexualising her and so when he declared love, which is the habit in paranormal series, it didn't fit for even a moment.  Michael barely saw Ash as human let alone an individual person with feelings which could be hurt. This of course was magnified by the fact that the evolution of Michael's relationship with Ash mostly happened through internal monologue rather than shared experiences.

One of the things that I have loved about the Gargoyles series is that it felt explicitly feminist and I am sad to report, it seems that Warren decided to drop this approach in Hard to Handle. While it was funny to see Michael's interactions with his siblings and mother, it was particularly problematic the way that gender was treated. Warren actually sought to frame Michael as a oppressed by having so many women in his life. Really? Being surrounded by women is hard? If that were not enough, Michael constantly used the feminine as a pejorative.
In the retelling, he imagined he would change the scream to a hoarse, manly shout of surprise; but in the moment, the high pitch of his girlish exclamation sounded like a harmony to the unearthly shriek that shook the air around them.  (pg 7)
He might have soiled himself, or at the very least, whimpered and cried like a little girl. Very bad for his image. (pg 15)
He screamed, a small part of his mind shaking free of the error to wonder whether or not he sounded like a little girl. (pg 95)
He opened his mouth to release another, girly wordless scream and heard instead his own voice bellow in an unfamiliar tone of command. (pg 98)
Michael's very understanding of masculinity itself is extremely problematic

Hard Breaker: A Beauty and Beast Novel (Gargoyles Series) - Christine Warren

Well, unlike the previous ones, the h's reactions weren't over the top, obnoxious, etc. I did think she fell over with her legs in the air way too quickly though.

I kinda feel cheated that we didn't get Rose and Ghrem's story as Rose seems to be a rational sort. OTOH, it seems they were the first, and they've spent at least some time apart.

So the h is inadvertently helping a warden traitor through the underground and it would appear, he is attempting to either lead the nocturnis to her or to find her contact. Not sure, but I'd guess they were after her. I also wonder if he didn't slip a tracker on her at some point and nobody even thought to look. Whatever - demons picked a bad spot to attack her as a Guardian just happened to be perched on the front of an abandoned church.

I have to ponder a bit. Where exactly did her uncle and cousin hide the Guardian they were in charge of. Indications were they lived in Scotland maybe, and yet... no Guardian was found there. So were they in charge of the one destroyed that triggered Ash's summoning?

Our Guardian is...our typical guardian - too much testosterone at times. although, he did seem to be a deeper thinker than the previous ones.

In some ways, I can't help but think the author saw a chance to return to her Others world and just thew something together to finish this one up. And maybe that's a good thing as the heroine didn't seem to be so attitude ridden.

great book and great characters
Baby, I'm Howling For You (Alphaville) - Christine Warren

Renny was a wolf shifter, Her car ran out of gas about thirteen miles from her destination of Alpha. Renny had to put as much distance as she could between herself and her pursuers.  They were the reason Renny hadn’t stopped to fuel up. They’d already chased her across two states lines, Alpha is in the state of Washington was a town for shifters who had nowhere else to go. - wolves driven from their pack, bears with injuries and scars inflicted by careless hunters. Lions who couldn’t control their shifts, leopards who needed to change their spots all went to the haven called Alpha and eventually they all got better. Geoffrey had sent five male coyote male enforcers after Renny.  Renny turned to a wolf and took off running hoping she could get to Alpha before the coyotes  got to her. Then Bryce -Geoffrey’s Beta and closest friend .came up to her side and knocker Renny off her feet. Then Renny saw a light and ran for it hoping it was Alpha as she was wounded now and heavily bleeding but it was a cabin that smelt of wolf. There was a man in the shadows who  had shot Bryce and Bryce ran back into the woods.  Now Renny figured she would be the next one  to be shot then she collapsed. Mick sat home for another Friday night. He could have slept but did’’t want to  because often his dreams were of his dead mate  Beth even though it had been eight years  but he thought he would be over it by now. Most would have died with their mate or shortly thereafter. But for some reason Mick hadn’t . Mick picked up up an unconscious  Renny and brought her in the cabin. He locked the door and called the deputy sheriff and told him what was going on. The next morning Renny went to her car to find it totalled with her clothes ripped up as well as urinated on  all over the highway.  Renny hadn’t heard Mich show up but then he shot her his shirt as she was naked from shifting back from being a wolf. Then Renny heard her cell phone as it must have fallen under the seat and manage to not be broken but Mick grabbed the phone out of Renny’s hand and answered  the phone it was Geoffrey and it turns out Beth- Michs dead mate was Geoffrey’s half sister. Mich had already had a run in with Geoffrey when he was in college and Mich had come out  on top. Mich told Geoffrey to stay away from Renny and he hung up the phone. Renny learned Mich was a graphic novel author and she had read some of his novels. He also drew his own pictures for his novels. Mich was world famous and had won numerous awards. Mich had kissed Renny hard and when he let her go he acted again like he didn’t want to be bothered with her. Mich. Mich told her  she would live with him at least until they got they got Geoffreys fibe coyote enforcers. But then Molly stepped in and offered Renny her extra bedroom in her place. Renny decided to live with Molly who was a lion shifter as was her brother who was a deputy sheriff for Alpha. Molly and Renny went on a shopping spree some things were given to them and then other things like  her clothes she bought  at a second hand shop..Then three of the coyotes  attacked Molly and Renny, two keeping Molly busy and the third trying to pull Renny out of the truck to kidnap her. But then Mich and Zeke show up and scared  the coyotes away. Then Mich claimed Renny as his mate right then and there and marked her in front of Molly and Zeke.

This was an excellent, well written shifter romance and I loved it.  I didn’t want to put this down.  I loved the whole idea of Alpha and how everyone had everyone else’s back. Also there was several shifter species living together in peace and happiness. I loved how Molly and Renny became quick close friends. I loved how the whole town immediately was ready to protect Renny. I especially loved Mich and Renny together. This kept my attention for the first page until the last no problem. I loved the plot and pace. I found nothing to criticize and that was great. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book and I highly recommend.
