A Bad Case of Stripes
A Bad Case of Stripes - David Shannon

A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon is about Camilla Cream, who is worried about what other people think about her. She will not even eat lima beans, which she loves, because people at school don't like them. The very moment she most wants to fit in, she becomes completely covered in colorful stripes! She seems to change colors to match whatever is happening around her. When the class says the Pledge of Allegiance, she turns red, white, and blue! Instead of blending in, she's standing out.

Guided Reading: P

Classroom Activities:

After reading the book, students discuss how it makes people feel when others tease them, and how to accept differences in others.

A Bad Case of Stripes - David Shannon

Camilla loves lots of things, but she will not do them because the kids at her school do not like them. She becomes so concerned with fitting in that she starts getting stripes on her. Can she learn who she really is? This book is great for teaching students to be who they are and not to worry about what people think about them.

Stripes
A Bad Case of Stripes - David Shannon

Camille Creed loves lima beans, but she wont eat him because her friends don't like them. She is so worried of what her friends would think of her! Today is the first day of school, and she is worried she wont have a good day and that her friends wont like her outfit. She worried so much, she gave herself a case of stripes! Will Camille ever learn how to put her fear of others opinions behind herself? You will just have to read to see!

How I would use this book in my classroom:

I would love to read this book to my students whenever they need a reminder on why its so important to always love themselves they way they are and how they should never place their value on the opinion of others.

David Goes To School By David Shannon
David Goes To School - David Shannon

This David book is all about David at school. In the David series, David is normally being told "No" by everyone. I wonder how this story will compare to the others. David is at school, lets see what his teachers have to say about his behavior in the classroom. Now, lets all draw pictures of behaviors that we should have at school, not what David is showing in our story. We will add all of our drawings into one book and create a story about what behaviors we all should be doing in school.

Always Be Yourself
A Bad Case of Stripes - David Shannon

Review:

This book is about a girl who is worried about how she looks to others. She loves lima beans but will not eat them because other kids at school do not eat them. Camilla, the characters name, is so worried about what others think of her she is worried about breaking out in a bad case of the stripes. Every time one of her classmates makes a suggestion about what she has, she breaks out into whatever they suggested. While an elderly lady helped her overcome what doctors could not, she begins to realize that she does not have to be like everyone else.

Classroom Activity:

My class will a cause and effect activity for this book. We will determine what things did classmates say cause her to turn certain patterns. For example, a classmate suggested she looked like a checkerboard, that caused her skin to turn into a checkered pattern.
