4 Out Of 5 "Norco-induced paranoia" STARS
Obscura - Joe Hart

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~BOOK BLURB~
Obscura
Joe Hart
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

In the near future, an aggressive and terrifying new form of dementia is affecting victims of all ages. The cause is unknown, and the symptoms are disturbing. Dr. Gillian Ryan is on the cutting edge of research and desperately determined to find a cure. She’s already lost her husband to the disease, and now her young daughter is slowly succumbing as well. After losing her funding, she is given the unique opportunity to expand her research. She will travel with a NASA team to a space station where the crew has been stricken with symptoms of a similarly inexplicable psychosis—memory loss, trances, and violent, uncontrollable impulses.

Crippled by a secret addiction and suffering from creeping paranoia, Gillian finds her journey becoming a nightmare as unexplainable and violent events plague the mission. With her grip weakening on reality, she starts to doubt her own innocence. And she’s beginning to question so much more—like the true nature of the mission, the motivations of the crew, and every deadly new secret space has to offer.

Merging thrilling science-fiction adventure with mind-bending psychological suspense, Wall Street Journal bestselling author Joe Hart explores both the vast mysteries of outer space and the even darker unknown that lies within ourselves.

~MY QUICKIE REVIEW~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Obscura is one part psychological thriller, one part critical journey into deep space, and another part scientific search for a cure for a devastating disease, with a dousing of Norco induced paranoia; tossed together with mostly likable characters.  I should have fully connected with this more than I did.  Maybe it was the lackluster characters or the narration, or that it was to science fiction-y for me.  Maybe…it’s a little of each.
I will say this…Obscura could be awesome as a movie, I'm quite certain it would hold my complete attention in that context.  While I definitely liked this, I just always felt somewhat detached while listening.  You know when you're watching something on TV while scrolling through social media on your phone.  It was kind of like that, basically, I was easily distracted.  But seriously, what I'm really trying to say is you should totally give this a try if the synopsis sounds good to you.
Honor Among Thieves
Rachel Caine and Ann Aguirre
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Petty criminal Zara Cole has a painful past that’s made her stronger than most, which is why she chose life in New Detroit instead of moving with her family to Mars. In her eyes, living inside a dome isn’t much better than a prison cell.

Still, when Zara commits a crime that has her running scared, jail might be exactly where she’s headed. Instead, Zara is recruited into the Honors, an elite team of humans selected by the Leviathan—a race of sentient alien ships—to explore the outer reaches of the universe as their passengers.

Zara seizes the chance to flee Earth’s dangers, but when she meets Nadim, the alien ship she’s assigned, Zara starts to feel at home for the first time. But nothing could have prepared her for the dark, ominous truths that lurk behind the alluring glitter of starlight.

~MY QUICKIE REVIEW~

Full disclosure:  In the beginning, I was totally into this but once she (Zara) started "bonding" with the spaceship (Alien Life-form), I became more interested in winning the games of Free-Cell I was playing (while listening to audio) than in actually comprehending what was going on in this story.  The "bonding" threw me off, it was like an odd sexual experience reminiscent of the 80's movie Cocoon

Freaky!

From there, I'm not fully sure what went on in this…I believe there was a lot of action and more freaky bonding.  I just didn't connect with this, but clearly, there are many who have.

I recommend reading the book before listening because not all of this story works in audio format.
Gemina (The Illuminae Files) - Jay Kristoff,Amie Kaufman

~ABOUT THE BOOK~

Gemina

Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Moving to a space station at the edge of the galaxy was always going to be the death of Hanna’s social life. Nobody said it might actually get her killed.
The sci-fi saga that began with the breakout bestseller Illuminae continues on board the Jump Station Heimdall, where two new characters will confront the next wave of the BeiTech assault.
Hanna is the station captain’s pampered daughter; Nik the reluctant member of a notorious crime family. But while the pair is struggling with the realities of life aboard the galaxy’s most boring space station, little do they know that Kady Grant and the Hypatia are headed right toward Heimdall, carrying news of the Kerenza invasion.
When an elite BeiTech strike team invades the station, Hanna and Nik are thrown together to defend their home. But alien predators are picking off the station residents one by one, and a malfunction in the station’s wormhole means the space-time continuum might be ripped in two before dinner. Soon Hanna and Nik aren’t just fighting for their own survival; the fate of everyone on the Hypatia—and possibly the known universe—is in their hands.
But relax. They’ve totally got this. They hope.
~MY QUICKIE REVIEW~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I don't know that I would have gleaned everything that was going on in this if I hadn't previously read it.  I felt like the audio was difficult to follow in certain sections.  If I rated on the audio version alone my rating would probably be 4-Stars.  What follows here is my review of the book edition:

This series is the cat's meow and dog's bark and the ram's bahhhaah…all that shit and more…It's not going to be for everyone…but damn, it should be.  I think so, anyway.  The format is crazy, and it (for me) may be part of what makes it so good…that, and the amazing and intricate plot.  Nothing is off limits in this series.

I read this both from a hardcover book (that my daughter bought me for Christmas) and a Kindle eBook that I borrowed from the library at the same time.  I'm so glad that I did it this way.  Because…the eBook is good for low lighting and when I was at work, seriously though, that book is lug…and the actual lug of a book is perfect for those pages with small, teeny tiny pictures/documents and such on them.  I flipped back and forth between the two constantly.  I also used an Audible credit for the Audiobook of Gemina, which I plan to listen to right before Obsidio comes out in March 2018.

I would call this a fun, laugh out loud kind of Space Opera.  A character-driven story with fantastically sapient-diverse characters, which is why I was reminded of Guardians of the Galaxy.  With similar character descriptions and the life-affirming sentiments found in Avatar. Yes, there's swearing and sexual situations aplenty.  Which really just added to the quirkiness of this story.

My only issue may be with the narration because sometimes I was lost in regards to who the characters were and what was going on.  I think it may have been due to there not being a significant silence between scenes.  I'm certain there were whole scenes that I missed out on because I was just…lost.  I didn't always know whose head I was in, either.  It would have been beneficial to have a full-cast narration to differentiate the characters.  I believe it would have a made a huge difference.  Despite this, I still feel Rachel Dulude did a decent narration.

Will I continue this seriesYa know, I didn't know this at first, but the next two books are considered stand-alone just set in the same Universe…so yeah, I’m totally going to read (or listen to) them too.
