Demon Familiar (Wanted #1) by Bellora Quinn & Sadie Rose Bermingham
Demon Familiar (Wanted #1) - Bellora Quinn,Sadie Rose Bermingham

Demon Familiar is the first book in the Wanted series, and we are introduced to a whole new world, which I can't wait to learn more about. Neil witnesses the death of his mother by Bone Men, and runs away, needing to hide from both them AND his father. He meets Mal as he is trying to sell his very desirable, but distinguishable, car so he has funds. Mal and Neil have an instant spark, but neither of them act on it immediately. This just makes it even hotter when they finally do.

I love this couple of author's work - I don't think I've read a bad book by them. Yes, their characters may frustrate the hell out of me (which they know and laugh about!), but their stories are always interesting and gripping. The writing and editing is their usual high standard, the world building superb, and with a whole host of characters I can't wait to see more of - Merc!

A brilliant start to the series, with not all questions answered, so I can't wait to read more. Absolutely recommended by me.

* A copy of this book was provided to me with no requirements for a review. I voluntarily read this book, and my comments here are my honest opinion. *

Down the freebie rabbit hole ...
Darkness Awakened - Stephanie Rowe
Southern Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1) - Angie Fox
The Accidental Demon Slayer - Angie Fox
Forced Compliance (The Galactic Outlaws Book 1) - Bradford Bates
Witched At Birth (A Paris, Texas Romance) - Dakota Cassidy
Thunder Hunter - Rachel Medhurst
Necessary Magic - Val St. Crowe
The Royal Companion: An epic love story (The Companion series Book 1) - Tanya Bird

Browsing on Amazon to fill in book data and glancing at goodreads SOS group's freebie thread, some kindle edition finds that were free today.

Yes, I do know better and the TBR is staggering.

I had already read and enjoyed (but still free):  Southern Spirits (Southern Ghost Hunter Mysteries Book 1) - Angie Fox  and The Accidental Demon Slayer - Angie Fox

There were more on that thread (skipping to the newest posts that's https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/449475-book-freebies-kindle-nook-author-pub-other?comment=178853157&page=174#comment_178700740 ); some I skipped for no other reason than too many quoted praises in place of the book description ( or already read/downloaded, seemed to be short stories,  serial episodes which I'm not really in the mood to read...).

Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction, Vol. 1
Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction, V... Dead Dead Demon's Dededededestruction, Vol. 1 - Inio Asano 3 stars

I thought this was bit of a letdown. Aliens have parked a giant spaceship over Japan, and three years later, life goes on. Thousands died on 8/31, and Kadode is struggling to find meaning to her life. Her father disappeared during the first wave of the alien assault, her mother is an emotional and mental wreck, and the future doesn't have much meaning. Kadode and her friends hang out, play video games, and try to pretend that a big black cloud of doom isn't hanging over their heads.

While the art is very detailed, I thought some of the characters looked downright weird. I pity Inio Asano's assistants, because the backgrounds are jam-packed with detail, and every panel is full of illustration, screentone, and, to me, noise. The panels looked cluttered and felt claustrophobic.

The story didn't engage me, and I kept waiting for something to happen. I usually enjoy character driven stories, but for whatever reason, I did not find this compelling.

Touch of the Demon
Touch of the Demon - Diana Rowland

This picks up right where the cliffhanger that was book 4 (Sins of the Demon) left off. Kara has been summoned to the demon realm by Mzatal. She's unbalanced and needs to figure things out quickly.
I had a harder time with this one than I thought I would. What I enjoyed about the previous 4 books was the paranormal police procedural. And Jill, Tessa, Eilahn, Zack, and Ryan. That is not this book, at all. Kara's friends make an appearance at the end.
The first half of the world is definitely more world building, demon realm 101. It was both dry and interesting, but I found my attention drifting and would put the book down to read later. It picked up about the halfway through. Answers abound in this one. Kara does some stupid things (and I was disappointed, but oh well). Overall, this lacked the enjoyment for me. Enough so that I may or not may read the next. I haven't decided.
