The Freaks of Mayfair
The Freaks of Mayfair - George Plank,E.F. Benson

The Freaks of Mayfair is a series of portraits of fictional inhabitants of Mayfair. The stories, in so far as they are stories rather than vignettes, are not related to each other, and I think the book would have worked better for me if they had been.

Without this connection, the portraits, while funny in part, are not all that memorable. I think, I would have enjoyed these better if they had been connected because it would have allowed the characters to interact and develop another dimension outside of the small snippet we get in each story. I guess, what I was missing was that characters cross over into the stories of other Mayfair inhabitants, much like characters in Wodehouse's Wooster stories pop up throughout various books and we get to recognise people we have already met.

So, while this was an amusing way to spend a few hours, The Freaks of Mayfair is not on par with the Mapp and Lucia stories simply because the is too little of the various characters before we move on to the next story, whereas we get to follow Mapp and Lucia through several trials of their relationship.

Still, there was one story called Aunt Georgie that seems to introduce us to the blueprint for George Pillson in the Mapp and Lucia series, and it was fascinating that Benson must have already assembled the cast of Mapp and Lucia when he wrote The Freaks of Mayfair in 1916.

Fun fast read
Cirque Des Freaks - Julian Lopez

A short and enjoyable horror collection by a relative unknown in the genre. My particular favouties are A masked Camaraderie set in Venice with a very original concept, and Cirque des Freaks a rather chilling circus tale. Interestingly the stories all concern same sex relationships, this is an observation and in some ways adds a little spice to the storytelling.

No rating for this one...
Street Freaks - Terry Brooks

I love Terry Brooks and am such a fan of his Shannara series but try as I might even if it's by one of my favorite authors I just can't get into this one. It's SciFi and I'm a fantasy girl at heart. So no rating for this one from me because it's not a case of bad book just a bad choice on my part.

Review: The Stereotypical Freaks
The Stereotypical Freaks - Howard Shapiro

"Life after eighteen sucks"... Dennis Leary once said, and I'd amend that slightly to also include " life before eighteen as well".
The story takes place in a typical High School (East Slade), where everyone is stereotyped in their roles and personalities. Dan (a geek) and Tom (a smart kid) are best friends and a part of their two-member basement band. When a Battle of the Bands is announced at school Dan want to take part, but Tom doesn't because they don't have a lead guitarist and a drummer. This is where the other characters are introduced, Marcel "Mark", a football star and Jacoby (a weird foreign exchange student). Together they make a band called "The Stereotypical Freaks". Because they are stereotyped at school and freaks because they are not what their labels dictate.
"These labels don't define us"
When one of the members reveals a life-changing secret, winning the competition takes on a whole new meaning.
I LOVED the book. It was a normal life comic about four teenagers who are sensitive and are not afraid to show it. When I started to read this book, I thought it would be a fun quick read. I was wrong. I was happy everyone got what they wanted at the end, but it was an emotional journey, for the characters in the book as well as the readers. It was a different kind of comic than I usually read, but it was exceptional in its own way.
