Riprap and Cold Mountain Poems - Gary Snyder

O, ah! The awareness of emptiness brings forth a heart of compassion!

Gary Snyder

Happy 87th birthday, Gary Snyder! The Pulitzer Prize winning writer and environmental activist was the inspiration for Japhy Ryder in Jack Kerouac's novel, The Dharma Bums.

The Fifty Most Quoted Lines of Poetry

The usual caveats abound -- it had to be full lines, and google data are, and this is a technical term, bananas -- but still a cute little statisticle. (You know, like listicle, but with statistics?)

But Jesu H. Maria, freaking Joyce Kilmer makes the list? If I were to write a list of poems I hate most, Trees would top the list, and then there would be several empty spaces, and then something by that one hippie poet whose name escapes me, maybe Gary something? Snyder! But then I don't really hate his stuff, it just makes me tired and embarrassed. I'll have to think on my hatreds.

Passage Through India: An Expanded and Illustrated Edition - Gary Snyder

A delightful and sometimes deep travelogue of Snyder's visit to India. Spare language and targeted details make this narrative, which was written more or less as a letter based on his journals, both insightful and poetic even when the prosaic is being described. Allen Ginsberg and Peter Orlovsky figure, as do a certain number of drugs and a reasonable amount of gastric upset. There's one photo of a Buddha statue that I could look at for hours--and have.
