Meet The Earl At Midnight by Gina Conkle is a fantastic historical romance.  Ms. Conkle has given readers a well-written book populated with an outstanding cast of characters.  Lydia finds herself being traded to Edward, Earl of Greenwich, to pay her stepfather and brother's debt from stealing from the Earl.  Lydia and Edward's story is packed with drama, humor and sexy bits.  I enjoyed reading Meet The Earl At Midnight and look forward to reading more from Gina Conkle in the future.  Meet The Earl At Midnight is book 1 of the Midnight Meetings Series but can be read as a standalone.  This is a complete book, not a cliff-hanger.

I’ve loved Gina Conkle’s books ever since I read her first book back in 2014. She writes well-researched Viking romance that has everything from hot romance, actions and a healthy dose of what you’d call the ancient Viking lifestyle. Book 2 of her newest Viking series Forgotten Sons wasn’t any different. Her Viking Warrior had everything that you can expect in a romance novel.

The series titled Forgotten Sons is based on a band of Viking brothers where they’re mainly connected by circumstances, rather than bloodline. Book 1, Kept by the Viking largely focused on the H and h’s relationship and everything surrounding it, rather than building up a backstory for the heroes of the Forgotten Sons, as they call themselves. Then again, with 6 of them in total, I’m sure the author will reveal their stories one by one in their own books. This, I’d say, works as an element of surprise since right now you don’t know much about the Sons except for the 2 who had already had their stories told. These 6 Viking warriors had known each-other since childhood. They share a very strong bond and would do anything for one another. They’re called Forgotten Sons because of some circumstances or the other has made them leave their own home in search of glory, financial stability and, if possible, a home of their own where they can settle.

In Kept by The Viking, we’re introduced to the leader of the Sons, Rurik and a Frankish slave girl called Safira. They weren’t meant to be together though Safira needed Rurik’s help in getting away from a sh!tty household. In the end it was discovered that Safira was abducted from her wealthy merchant father’s household and sold into slavery. She wanted to get away and return to her family. Little did she know while she was planning that, that a handsome Viking would escort her. She wasn’t expecting much, but got more than what she bargained for. The story had actions and suspense, as Rurik was fighting for a land to settle down, but in a twist of fate he would have to fight someone with whom he shares his bloodline, even though no love was lost between the two. Someone who he’d hated all his life and tried his best to avoid. One of the reasons why he left his home and became a mercenary. Thankfully, with Safira by her side, Rurik would find the strength to claim what he can then rightfully call his own.

Detective Ramone is faced with a unique dilemma as he seeks to uncover a murderer-he has too many confessors to the crime and each insist they acted alone. Gina Lamanna's newest offering, Pretty Guilty Women, is buoyed by the wake of other popular thrillers that feature wealthy but troubled women fighting back against oppressive partners. Lamanna's version consists of a series of police interviews with the copious witnesses, followed by short chapters containing that character's contribution to the unspooling storyline. The women in the book are portrayed as angry and powerful in dealing with the men that they are paired who are presented as either completely ineffectual or dangerous. The action takes place in a "closed room" set-up: an elite spa hosting a lavish destination wedding weekend where the murder inconveniently occurs. The main characters are connected by family ties and/or college friendships, all rife with conflict and resentment. Themes include domestic violence, infertility struggles, parental challenges, substance abuse, and resistance to female oppression. These topics have been extensively explored recently in a variety of ways, and it would be a challenge for anyone seeking to present a fresh perspective in an overcrowded and talented field. Lamanna's prior well-loved mystery series are typically more cozy and romance-infused, and that sensibility is apparent here, but it doesn't quite fit the weighty topics she is trying to address. Pretty Guilty Women contains some pulse-raising moments that make it worth the quick time it takes to read, but other contemporary works have already covered this ground-and have done so to greater effect.

Recommended for die-hard fans of the Netflix show Stranger Things.  Like DVD extras in [audio] book form.

Worum geht es: 
Emanuela Wolf, Professorin für Sozialpsychologie, leidet seit dem plötzlichen Beziehungsende mit ihrer großen Liebe und dem kurz darauf folgenden Tod ihres großen Bruders in Teenagerjahren unter Bindungsangst und hat die letzten Jahre fast ausschließlich mit ihrer Karriere verbracht. Doch als der Hype um den Hobbypsychologen und ehemaligen Kellner Bernhard Rett ausbricht, der mittlerweile als erfolgreicher Beziehungscoach mit sehr fragwürdigen Methoden arbeitet, ist ihr Interesse geweckt. Sie, als gestandene Psychologin, fühlt sich in der Lage, ihm auf den Zahn zu fühlen und vereinbart eine Sitzung. Als sie sich auf seine Methoden einlässt und sich ausgerechnet auch noch in ihn verliebt, sterben plötzlich alle Männer, mit denen sie etwas hatte. 

Meine Meinung: 
Natürlich gibt es einige erotische Szenen in diesem Buch. Es ist schließlich ein Erotikthriller und da sollte das niemanden wundern. Ich war ein wenig überrascht, einige Rezensionen zu lesen, wo die Leser davon wohl überfordert waren. Ich hatte allerdings auch nicht das Gefühl, dass das ganze in eine „Porno-Richtung“ geht. Die Szenen sind gut und abwechslungsreich beschrieben und passen zu den jeweiligen Situationen. Auch der Thrilleraspekt kam mir nicht zu kurz. Die Handlung ist für mich durchgehend interessant, größtenteils spannend und auch das Ende war für mich kaum vorhersehbar. Ich ärgere mich ein wenig über mich selbst, dass ich da nicht drauf gekommen bin, da ich im Rätseln des Täters eigentlich ganz okay bin und es natürlich auch Hinweise gab. Es war jedenfalls nicht allzu offensichtlich. Jedoch handelt die Protagonistin mir stellenweise zu sehr außerhalb ihres beschriebenen Charakters. Gerade in den Sitzungen bei Bernhard Rett ließ sie ihre berufliche Kompetenz schnell in den Hintergrund rücken und vertraute ihm quasi blind, da er ja den starken Mann symbolisiert. Das Buch ist quasi voll von Klischees und Schubladen-Denken, was die Männer- und irgendwie auch die Frauenwelt betrifft. Und genau das ist mein großer Kritikpunkt. Ich finde die hier vermittelten Thesen deutlich zu pauschalisiert und fast schon steinzeitlich. Die Autorin ist selbst Psychologin und Beziehungscoach und gerade deshalb ist es für mich nicht verständlich diese Art als „Wie Männer ticken“ zu präsentieren, was aber wohl die Absicht dahinter war. 

„Die Idee zum Thriller „Tödlich ist die Versuchung“ entstand durch zahlreiche Gespräche mit Freundinnen und Klientinnen über ihre Beziehungsprobleme. Gina Jacobsens Anliegen war es, einen Erotikthriller zu schreiben, in dem sich das Thema „Wie Männer ticken“ wie ein roter Faden durch die Handlung zieht.“

Der Schreibstil ist flüssig und schnell zu lesen. Es gibt kaum Ausschmückungen oder Landschaftsbeschreibungen, was ich hier als angenehm und spannungsfördernd empfinde. 

Fazit: 
Ein ziemlich klischeebehafteter Erotikthriller, bei dem man jedoch trotzdem auf seine Kosten kommen kann, wenn man über einige Dinge hinweg sieht.
