Reading progress update: I've read 49%.
The Man in the Iron Mask - Alexandre Dumas,Francine du Plessix Gray,Joachim Neugroschel

As much as I love the tv and film adaptations of the Musketeer stories, they never capture the characters and the mannerisms associated with them that are front and centre of Dumas' original stories.

"And while we are on this head," said Aramis, "you also are a malcontent; you also, Raoul, have griefs to lay to the king. Follow our example; pass over into Belle-Isle. Then we shall see, I guarantee upon my honor, that in a month there will be war between France and Spain on the subject of this son of Louis XIII., who is an Infante likewise, and whom France detains inhumanly. Now, as Louis XIV. would have no inclination for a war on that subject, I will answer for an arrangement, the result of which must bring greatness to Porthos and to me, and a duchy in France to you, who are already a grandee of Spain. Will you join us?"

"No; for my part I prefer having something to reproach the king with; it is a pride natural to my race to pretend to a superiority over royal races. Doing what you propose, I should become the obliged of the king; I should certainly be the gainer on that ground, but I should be a loser in my conscience.— No, thank you!"

"Then give me two things, Athos,— your absolution."

"Oh! I give it you if you really wished to avenge the weak and oppressed against the oppressor."

[The second request is for fresh horses ... in case you were wondering.]

It never really becomes clear in the films and tv series that Athos, the Comte de la Fere, has objections to royalty. Perhaps it would cause too many questions and take too long to reconcile with the various tales that focus on the Musketeers' loyalty to the king and the institution of the monarchy.

The contradiction and the various motivations of the characters in the books, however, is what makes the stories so much fun.

Gray's Promise (King Security #2) by Anni Fife
Gray's Promise - Anni Fife

Gray's promise is book 2 in the A King Security Series. I read book one, Luke's Redemption, a while back and loved it. I was lucky enough to receive an email from Annie herself asking me if I wanted to read book 2. I of course jumped at the chance. I am so glad that I did. As good as Luke's Redemption was Gray's Promise tops it. To me this book, actually both book's are movie quality. You know when you read a book and think to yourself I would love to watch this play out on the big screen? Well that is what I kept thinking. This book had my heart breaking, my heart racing, and my heart jumping for joy, and sometimes doing all 3 at once. There is a perfect balance of romance, which by the way is a 2nd chance romance, mystery and murder. The book is gripping. It drags you in on page one and makes you want more on the last page. I was on the edge of my seat, turning pages as fast as I could.

In the book Zoey Morgan was 19 on the night her world turned upside down. She was brutally raped and her family was murdered, and the love of her life walked away. Now 14 years later Zoey has blocked that night away in her mind and cannot remember anything but a few snippets here and there. She is out to discover the truth of that night as well as why her love left.

Grayson "Gray" Walker's heart was broken on that night when he is told that Zoey, who he called his Butterfly, has accepted his brother Jacks proposal of marriage. He decides to walk away and join the Marines. He has tried to see Zoey a few times over the years until one night she told him to just go away. Heart broken and defeated Gray does as Zoey asks.

Now 14 years later Zoey walks into the King's Security Office asking Gray for his help to unlock the memories and find out what really happened that night so she can move on with her life.

If you like a good roller coaster ride, I think you should grab a copy of this book and buckle up. You won't be sorry.

Gray: The Complete Series
Gray: The Complete Series - Lou Cadle,La... Gray: The Complete Series - Lou Cadle,Lauren Fortgang I've read a lot of dystopian/ post-apocalyptic books because it is one of my favorite genres but I got to to the point where I was tiring of the same old, run of the mill post-apoc books. So I admit when I came across this series I was hesitant to start it because I thought it was going to be "one of those."

I'm so glad I didn't discount it and proceeded to listen because even though it does contain the usual tropes, it was a very, very solid post-apoc series! It was extremely well written and the storyline and audio performance kept me engaged from start to finish. It really just exceeded all of my expecations!

I think what really makes this series special are the two main characters, Coral and Benjamin. I liked both of them immensely and was fully invested in their survival and outcome. I enjoyed watching Coral's character grow in strength and maturity and I liked seeing the dynamics between her and Benjamin's relationship evolve.

Another thing I really liked about this series was the ending. I was glad it didn't follow the norm like so many others I've read, and Coral and Benjamin decided to branch out on their own, just the two of them, instead of returning to the community to rebuild.

If you are also a fan of post-apoc stories and/or you're a woman in a relationship, friendly or romantic, with an older man, then you should give this series a try. I think you'll really enjoy it!

Gray For You
Gray For You - Spencer Spears Gray For You - Spencer Spears I will start out by saying that when I started this book I was a bit intimidated by it's size at over 500 pages it is bigger than your average gay romance novel. I should have known that there was nothing to worry about, Spencer Spears has never disappointed me yet and she certainly did not do so with this awesome story. Once I started reading the story and characters hooked me and never let me go till the end. OK.. for starters, I would love to find a man out there like Gray, he is just so incredible and so exactly what Tyler needs in every way. I love the fact that even though Tyler could easily have become a whining, annoying, one-dimensional paper doll of a person, due to Ms. Spears writing for me he never came close to being just that. This story was never too angsty and though the relationship took most of the book to get them to the mutual "I Love Yous", it felt like the timing was perfect and necessary to be true to the two MCs. Since I had ended up reading "Oliver Ever After" before this one, I obviously knew about Gray & Tyler being together since they were in quite a bit of Luke's story. It was certainly nice seeing how they got to that point. Over all another awesome read that sucked me in and by the end made me cry lots of happy tears!

REVIEW BY AMY - Gray's Promise (King Security #2) by Anni Fife
Gray's Promise - Anni Fife
Zoey Morgan seems to have it all as a successful surgeon in Boston. However, perfection lies only on the surface. Plagued by nightmares and amnesia from a tragedy that ripped her family from her fourteen years ago, she finds the courage to reach out to the only man who can make her feel safe. She’s buried the memory of their love, but her heart—and her body—responds to the ex-marine in ways that are all too familiar.

Grayson “Gray” Walker’s heart shattered when Zoey chose another man over him. Since then, he’s built an impenetrable wall around his emotions. But from the moment she implodes back into his life, her vulnerability breaches his defenses. His skills as an elite member of the King Security team cannot shield him from the devastation of learning he might have left Zoey high and dry when she needed him most. Now, Gray must navigate the tripwire of helping her heal while protecting himself from being hurt again.

As the embers of their potent love reignite, an old threat awakens, leading to greater danger than ever before.
