The Deep End of the Sea - Heather Lyons

The Deep End of the Sea

Heather Lyons

What if all the legends you’ve learned were wrong?

Brutally attacked by one god and unfairly cursed by another she faithfully served, Medusa has spent the last two thousand years living out her punishment on an enchanted isle in the Aegean Sea. A far cry from the monster legends depict, she’s spent her time educating herself, gardening, and desperately trying to frighten away adventure seekers who occasionally end up, much to her dismay, as statues when they manage to catch her off guard. As time marches on without her, Medusa wishes for nothing more than to be given a second chance at a life stolen away at far too young an age.

But then comes a day when Hermes, one of the few friends she still has and the only deity she trusts, petitions the rest of the gods and goddesses to reverse the curse. Thus begins a journey toward healing and redemption, of reclaiming a life after tragedy, and of just how powerful friendship and love can be—because sometimes, you have to sink in the deep end of the sea before you can rise back up again.

Heather Lyons is one of my favorite Authors, because of her series The Collectors Society.  If you haven't tried this series yet then you should.

I'm not mythology junkie, so I went into this knowing what the average person knows about Greek Mythology.  Which are only the basics.  With that being said…I thought this a deftly done and modern take on Medusa and the Greek Gods, one that I rather enjoyed reading.  The romance was sometimes on the bland side, but for those haters of insta-love, this could be just what they are looking for.  My only qualm was I really wanted more intensity throughout the story instead of only at the very end.

The Lost Codex - Heather Lyons

“Vomit is not the loveliest of perfumes.” Mary pats Bunting’s leg before standing up. “Oh, but there you’re wrong. To me, it smells like Traitorous Bitch Who Got What Was Coming to Her by Spilling Her Guts—and that, ladies, is a glorious smell.”

It's hard to believe that this is the end of the Collector's Society and all of the world's they protect. It is a bitter sweet end with lots of questions finally answered and a pretty inventive ending. I LOVED finally finding out who the Librarian is and what she is capable of. The romances are epic.

"No one will come for us, not any time soon, at least. And even if they did, would there be anything left to save? No healing spray can tend these injuries. “I love you,” Finn says. “I will always love you. I’m here with you, Alice. I’m with you until the end, and then beyond.”

But don't underestimate the power of Love (que nauseating awwwws and cheesy harps and such) or the cleverness of our MCs (especially Alice and the Librarian). The bad guys are terrible and numerous. The odds seem appallingly bleak. The hits are constant and seemingly insurmountable. The dialogue is witty and natural and I am going to miss this series something fierce. I hate goodbyes especially when it's to an incredible series with amazing characters, witty banter and clever world(s) development. I LOVE this book, this author, this series and want to scream it all from some rooftops...or cry....FRABJOUS, I'm a mess! If you are a fan of Literature and the classic characters that reside therein then I suggest you check out this series, you won't be disappointed!!

✾Goodreads Synopsis✾

House on a Hill by The Pretty Reckless

--some of the lyrics for this song…

Living, living still, their intention is to kill and they will, they will

But the children are doing fine, I think about them all the time

Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will

In this house on a hill

The dead are living still, their intention is to kill and they will, they will

Keep your children safe inside, out of pocket, out of mind

Until they drink the wine and they will, they will, they will♫

⇝My Thoughts⇜

This edition of The Collector's Society is a very dark one, it's got this whole weird vibe to it.  This particular book has a lot of Grimm Fairy Tale references.  Apparently those are some dark tales.  While, I didn't enjoy this book as much as the last one, because I seriously loved The Hidden Library, I still really liked The Forgotten Mountain.  This Series overall is a wonder to read and I highly recommend it.

My song choice reflects the darkness and bleakness of this story the best I could find, but you really won't understand it unless you read it, and even then you might not.

⇝Sex Factor⇜ Yes, there is explicit sex, but not overdone at all.  It's minimal compared to all that you get within this series.

The Deep End of the Sea
The Deep End of the Sea - Heather Lyons 3.5

This was mostly a very cute story, the beginning was so good but then it dragged a little bit and it got a tad cheesy there, or maybe Hermes and Medusa are too damn adorable.

All in all, an enjoyable read if a little silly at times.

My Thoughts

I have such a wondrous love for this series so far, so looking forward to reading the next book, The Forgotten Mountain. but still wanting to savor this one for a bit before I do read it.  I'm also way happy that I just found out there is to be a 4th book, The Lost Codex.  Oh, and there is also a Collector's Society Encyclopedia.  Which sounds kind of cool, I may have to purchase that.

If you like your books unique with numerous references to actual jumping or portal-ing into all the classics, with some seriously amazing characters, then you should definitely read this.  Or, just read it.  Because Wow.  This is now one of my all-time favorites, plus the best second-book-in-a-series I've ever read.

Sex Factor:  Yes, this is not YA, but it's only somewhat explicit.
