Ilona Andrews: Burn For Me
Burn for Me - Ilona Andrews

The start of a new series for me with this book, and Ilona Andrews show readers just how far someone is willing to go to Save their family:

Nevada Chase is forced to take on the most challenging case ever given to her family's PI firm, find and bring in a rogue rich boy who happens to be a Prime pyro magic user and who has no concerns on who he hurts or what he destroys with his abilities. But Nevada is not the only one who is pursuing him, Connor “Mad” Rogan is on the hunt as well and he too has no qualms with doing whatever it takes to get the job done, even kidnapping and torturing Nevada to get his way. Nevada is on a suicide mission but she would do anything to protect her family.

This book had me hooked from beginning to end and I am so glad that I gave this series a try after finishing Andrews’ Kate Daniels series. This does have some similar elements to it but it is much more magic based. There maybe other supernatural or paranormal creatures in this world but we are not introduced to them in this book. The magic that is showcased in this book is amazing and I love the urban fantasy setting of this book. As I said before it had a similar feel to their Kate Daniels series. I also found the case that Nevada has to undertake interesting with the whole underground cult aspect to it and Nevada is smart enough to figure out how to lure her subject in.

I liked Nevada as a character and what she is willing to do for her family, basically anything to protect them, even take on a job that she knows is probably going to be the death of her (and having a contingency plan if she fails). She is smart resourceful and has one of the coolest powers that I have read about for a main character. Nevada is a walking polygraph machine, she can tell when people or lying and if she really pulls she can force the truth out of them. This really becomes handy for her family private investigators firm. Her family have kept her power a secret as there is only really one job for someone with her ability and she would get swallowed up by the government somewhere.

Alright this is a book that you cannot judge by its cover. To me this book cover screams romance book and while there are aspects of wanting and lust in this book it is very far from the romance book that the cover suggests. There is more of a lust aspect in this book between the characters as Nevada is fairly determined for that to not happen. I do think that the relationship between Nevada and Rogan is a little dominating/domineering not to mention that Rogan is a straight up sociopath. I struggle to see how Nevada could develop feelings for an individual who had first kidnapped and tortured her (Stockholm syndrome I guess that she never got over). I don't know most of the people that meet Rogan cant help but state how good looking he is and that is the reason they should be together? However, I will give Nevada credit for not falling in love with him at first site, she did mention his looks but love was not on the table there.

Great start to a series and I look forward to reading the next book. I hope Andrews can stick to the less is more romance aspect of this book and focus more on the cases and assignments that Nevada gets as that is the interesting part of the story for me.

Enjoy!!!

Back At The Inn
Sweep with Me - Ilona Andrews

Dina and Sean rule the roost. There are some complicated guests arriving at the Inn each with major issues. meanwhile the inner Inn drama is hilarious with a temperamental chef insulted beyond his control.
As always the Andrews rocked it with this novella

Small Magics
Small Magics - Ilona Andrews

When I saw here on BookLikes that Sweep with Me was out, I went to Ilona Andrew's website to find out more, and noticed the release of a new anthology, published by Subterranean Press.  Yes please!

This is a compilation of the short stories Ilona Andrews has written, all previously published elsewhere, and for the first time in print, all the Curren POV's Gordon Andrews has written and posted on their website.  Interspersed are 3? full color illustrations.

It's a nice book - not the most impressive I've seen put out by Subterranean, but a good solid book.  I'd read some of the stories before, but enough of them were new to me to make me appreciate having bought it.

My only gripe with the book is with the Curran POVs.  As a character, these stories don't always flatter Curran, but that's trivial.  What is really disappointing, though, is the poor copy-editing of the Curran stories.  On the website, they're clear to state that the stories were written for fun, not edited, yada yada.  And that's totally understandable.  But I'd have though when it comes to publishing a limited release, numbered, signed, illustrated edition, the publisher, if not the authors themselves, would have wanted to take the time and make the effort to correct, at the very least, the most glaring omissions and errors (lots of the, a, an articles missing, or misplaced).

Ah well, a good collection that might have been great, but still welcome on my shelves.

Sweep with Me (Innkeeper Chronicles Novella)
Sweep with Me - Ilona Andrews

Fun; brief but it packs a punch at the end.  This one is for those who've already read the other Innkeeper Chronicle books, though there's enough 'tell' sprinkled throughout that a first-timer wouldn't be totally confused.  They would be totally spoiled for the others though, as there are spoilers to previous plots in the text.

A lot of the secondary cast are 'away' for this story, so Orro gets a bit more attention, and it appears Dina is making new friends.  Not sure if we'll see them again, as this novella has a pretty tidy HEA ending, but they'll be welcome additions to any future Innkeeper books.

Sweep With Me
Sweep with Me - Ilona Andrews

This was a novella and I wish that it had been fleshed out more to make it a longer story. I think that Dina's quickness of reconnecting with Gertrude Stein was way too fast considering how much of the story had her full of angst because she can tell that she and the inn were not synched up like they were before her sacrifice in "One Fell Sweep." I loved the story-line though with a whole new powerful entity out there. I hope we get to see the new characters introduced in this one again in future stories.

"Sweep With Me" takes place during the same time period of "Sweep of the Blade." Dina is still recovering with her sacrifice when she connected with a seed before it would become an inn. She also feels afraid that Sean, her boyfriend, and werewolf, may get hurt and she will be left alone again. I loved that we get to see a tradition of the inn's on Earth during "Treaty Day" where they have to allow anyone who wants to stay at the inn, to stay as a visitor. Due to this, Dina has agreed to host three special people/groups who may cause her trouble with the Assembly.

I loved that we get to see a new species in this one called the Drifen. They sound like superheroes or gods practically. I would love a new spin-off focusing on them and the leader that we get to meet in this one who had shades of Kate Daniels, though sadder somehow.

We also get Dina and Sean hosting galactic chickens. I maybe died at the illustration that was included.

And lastly we have Dina and Sean hosting a Medamoth. Sean's adventure with the Medamoth and Orro was the freaking best and I laughed for a long time. I wouldn't mind a POV.

I definitely cannot wait for a longer novel.
