Inkheart - Cornelia Funke,Anthea Bell

I will admit, it took me quite a long time to get into this book. But by the end, I loved it.

I remember trying to read this book multiple times growing up, but I just couldn't get through it. The first few chapters are interesting, but they really drag on. The book is written in a similar style to many old children's books like Treasure Island and Peter Pan where the action is slow to come and the narration is filled with lots of details and descriptions.

However, once I got into it, the book was fascinating. I loved the plot and I especially loved Meggie's character and how she grows throughout the novel. This book is filled with fascinating characters and situations. I also really enjoyed all of the quotes and references to other works of literature.

The whole idea of the book was magnificent and I really enjoyed it. This is a perfect fit for book lovers. The only drawback for me was how detailed it was. The world building was great, but after a while I just wanted the action to get going. There are so many interesting interconnected things, but it takes a really long time for them to all come together. I'm not surprised that my middle-school self gave up on it, but I am so glad I came back to it as an adult.

A great book with a fantastic plot that is long and slow at times, but overall a very cool read.

Inkheart
Inkheart - Cornelia Funke,Anthea Bell

This seems like a book I should like (a book about books! with a girl protagonist! that's low fantasy!... probably), but nothing about it grabs me. I've tried it a few times now and can't seem to get past about chapter 4. I'm finally admitting it's not a book for me and crossing it off my TBR list.

Jilo - I put this down pretty early in the book, but I do plan on attempting it again one day when I am more in the mood for it.

A Safe Place with You - I stopped reading at 15%. This work could have really benefited from the work of a more experienced translator.

Wrap-up: I feel good about the number of books read this month. I had more free time this month, but I started writing again and after a twelve year hiatus, I took up the clarinet again. I've also been going out every Friday morning with Abby to kayak. So, while I had plenty of free time, I've been devoting it to other activities.

July Reading List

I don't have much of a plan for reading this month. I want to finish The Hobbit and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone. I expect to complete American Gods this month as well. I lost my reading-buddy last month and haven't really picked it up since. I can't remember where I stopped in, not having updated the reading progress in a while, so I might have to go back and refresh my memory.

June Reading List

I'm still reading The Bourne Identity, but after I finish I plan on jumping into the Inkheart Trilogy. I'll be reading the illustrated Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone and I'll also be reading Parrotfish this month. Parrotfish was recommended to me by someone, though I can't recall who. I expect to read more books this month, but I don't have the rest of the months reading planned out yet.
