After Darkness Falls (After Darkness Falls #1) - May Sage

Even though Chloe has done everything right, some think Chloe should have to pay for her father’s sins and a series of attacks has her taking refuge in the notorious Institute of Paranormal Studies. Chloe sees it as a second chance and she believes she has nothing to lose, but nothing could be further from the truth. Levi knows what the sassy woman who entered his domain is at first glance. She is a relic so ancient that even an elder lord descended from the first immortals has reason to fear her and he knows that he should slit her throat while he has the chance.

This vampire romance thrills readers even as it stuns them with a fascinating world full of strong, convincing characters. Chloe and Levi have some sizzling chemistry but most of the story has them trying to stay away from each other. Chloe is a survivor one that readers can’t help but admire as a heroine as she struggles for her place in a world that she doesn’t really understand and this story mostly focuses on her and the steps she takes to move forward. The romance between Levi and Chloe explodes into passion about the same time that Chloe’s life takes an unexpected turn.

The plot is steady paced and builds the suspense to thrilling and chilling proportions throughout the story with some unexpected and stunning twists that keeps readers glued to the pages. This story focuses on mostly Levi and Chloe in a fascinating university setting (think Hogwarts for supes) and a very intriguing world of vampires and supes with some refreshingly different elements but also has a conflict and an enemy that has been building up some very complex and nefarious plans for some time that is spread out throughout the series which readers won’t want to miss.

Hank Zipzer 1: Niagara Falls - Or Does It? - Henry Winkler,Lin Oliver

The Vampire's Mail Order Bride by Kristen Painter
The Vampire's Mail Order Bride (Nocturne Falls, #1) - Kristen Painter

Why couldn't the whole story be as humorous and exciting as the first chapters? Why?

When True Night Falls / C.S. Friedman
When True Night Falls - C.S. Friedman

Two men, absolute enemies, must unite to conquer an evil greater than anything their world has ever known. One is a warrior priest ready to sacrifice anything and everything for the cause of humanity's progress; the other, a sorcerer who has survived for countless centuries by a total submission to evil. In their joint quest, both will be irrevocably changed.

There was never any doubt that I would read this novel—I enjoyed the first installment a great deal and it is part of my Science Fiction & Fantasy reading project. Not only that, but I found all three volumes at the popular used book sale in my city and had them on hand. If all of that wasn’t enough, last year at the When Words Collide writers’ conference, Peter V. Brett recommended it. He was on a panel about female characters in fantasy fiction and I came away quite impressed with his views. (He thinks that male and female characters should reflect reality, i.e. have equal numbers of male & female characters, among other things).

So, I was fired up to read this series and I have been enjoying it. I was somewhat dismayed, however, that Celia Friedman leaves behind one of her main female characters in this volume (Ciani) and I was left with only Hesseth, a female native of Erna, to carry the flag for women. Friedman does offer us the female child, Jenseny, but that doesn’t last all that long. By book’s end, we are left with just the guys.

I can certainly see, however, that Brett gathered some inspiration from this fantasy series. His Demon Cycle seems to owe a debt to the demons of this Coldfire Trilogy. One of my great pleasures in reading my long list of speculative fiction is seeing the various influences between authors, so this correlation pleases me.

Book number 311 in my Science Fiction and Fantasy Reading Project.

REVIEW BY MERISSA - Over the Falls (Ryder Bay #1) by Jordan Ford
Over the Falls (Ryder Bay #1) - Jordan Ford

Over the Falls is the first book in the Ryder Bay series, and it's one I can't wait to continue. It is full of those extreme feelings you can only get when you are young, plus hardships, and a dash of mystery. I have read 'Dear Diary' and loved the insight into Harley. I'm glad I don't have to wait until book three to find out what happened in her past, and yet I am totally thrilled to find out how she moves forward. I've already found some of it out in this book, but I just know there is so much more to come.

The characters are all extremely well written, whether you like them or not! There is one in particular who I think I know what happened, but don't want to say anything yet, because no doubt Jordan Ford will put a twist on it, and I shall be wrong!
