Magic Binds (Kate Daniels #9) by Ilona Andrews
Untitled - Ilona Andrews

Mercenary Kate Daniels knows all too well that magic in post-Shift Atlanta is a dangerous business. But nothing she’s faced could have prepared her for this…

Kate and the former Beast Lord Curran Lennart are finally making their relationship official. But there are some steep obstacles standing in the way of their walk to the altar…

Kate’s father, Roland, has kidnapped the demigod Saiman and is slowly bleeding him dry in his never-ending bid for power. A Witch Oracle has predicted that if Kate marries the man she loves, Atlanta will burn and she will lose him forever. And the only person Kate can ask for help is long dead.

The odds are impossible. The future is grim. But Kate Daniels has never been one to play by the rules…

my though

I don’t even know where to start to review this book. We had so much happening.

The whole book gave me emotional whiplash, I cried, and laughed and swooned even more. We get plenty dark and tender moments in the book but of course we also get the laugh out loud and crazy moments. Only Cate and Curran can make you laugh cry and swoon all on the same page without it seeming wrong.

We once and for all see what Roland is up to and there is no question about it anymore. There were a few confusing moments but in the end it all made sense.

Kate in this book really got to me, just because I thought, we see a rawer side of her.  But also we see her struggle with all her power and how to handle it.  We get some really tender moments with her and I really just wanted to hug and hold her. (In a not creepy way lol)

Curran, I thought I couldn’t love him anymore but I was so wrong.

Julie and Derrick really have grown up so much and I really just adore them. Julie is just becoming so smart, strong and independent. I’m still rooting for her and Derrick to get their own series lol.

We learn some surprising but fun things about Christopher. I was really sure how I felt about but it all came really nicely together.

I really loved Roman in this book, he was just plain hilarious and often lightened the mood.

I also really liked that we see Mahoon, coming around to be a bit friendlier, Martha of course is just lovely as ever.

The one person that disappointed me a little after all books and all the things that have happened was Jim.  I thought he was a big jerk in this book. I kind of could see where he is coming from but still overall did not really care for him.

Overall we have a great book , with a lots of action , love, humor and sad moments. Of course there are battles some bigger than others but also we again lose some people.

On the flip side. We gets someone back who turns out to be unlikely ally of Kate and crew , which I really enjoyed.

I rate this book a full 5 ★ and the next book cannot get here fast enough.

Some of my favorite quotes:

“No sacrificial pit ringed with skulls?” I asked.

“Ha. Ha.” Roman rolled his eyes. “Never heard that one before. I keep the virgins chained up in the basement. Do you want some coffee?”

He stared at me. A muscle jerked in his temple. Oh no. I’ve give the Beast Lord apoplexy. That seemed to be my calling in life.

“Are you okay?”

“I’m trying to decide if I really heard what you said or if somehow by brain quit on me and I hallucinated.”

“Take your time.”

“Did you run any of this by Curran?”

“I told him I was about to do something idiotic and dangerous, and he told me to go ahead and let him know if he could help in any way.”

“I don’t understand your relationship.”

‘Why are you bring so nice all of the sudden?”

“Well, since you got my sword back, I figure I can be cordial for a day or two. It will wear off.”

Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels #8) by Ilona Andrews
Magic Shifts - Ilona Andrews

After breaking from life with the Pack, mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate—former Beast Lord Curran Lennart—are adjusting to a very different pace. While they’re thrilled to escape all the infighting, Curran misses the constant challenges of leading the shapeshifters.

So when the Pack offers him its stake in the Mercenary Guild, Curran seizes the opportunity—too bad the Guild wants nothing to do with him and Kate. Luckily, as a veteran merc, Kate can take over any of the Guild’s unfinished jobs in order to bring in money and build their reputation. But what Kate and Curran don’t realize is that the odd jobs they’ve been working are all connected.

An ancient enemy has arisen, and Kate and Curran are the only ones who can stop it—before it takes their city apart piece by piece…

My thoughts:

I couldn’t wait to get my fingers on this book. I was really curious to see how it all would play out for Kate and Curran now that they no longer part of the pack. No longer being Beast Lord and Consort.  Especially Curran, since he was the beast lord for almost all his life or at least a pretty good chunk of it. Either way, he was always part of a pack. Now being on his own, with Kate has to be interesting to say the least.

I loved this book and it was by far much better than the last few books, at least that was my opinion. We get more of the ‘old’ Kate, pre pack and pack drama Kate and I really loved that. She seemed more confident again and more sure of herself and not having to answer the pack that doesn’t really support her anyways. She seemed more at ease even with all the stuff happening. Well most if the time.

Curran, on the other hand had a harder time to adjust to a “normal” living and it was quite comical at times. I think it will take him a while to get used to living without the pack.

Review: Magic Shifts (Kate Daniels #8) by Ilona Andrews
Magic Shifts - Ilona Andrews

Utterly entertaining and unforgettable!!

What I liked: I find there are two ways to read/listen to an Ilona Andrews book. One way is to take a breath, dig in and don't come up for air. It's a good way and don't get me wrong, I've done that in the past with this series. Now, I've become a hoarder with these books. I know I'm going to have to wait awhile to get another addition to the series, so I try to make the book last as long as possible. One way I did this with Magic Shifts is, I listened to part of the book and read other parts. See, I read too fast. I wanted to relish Magic Shifts and the only way I knew to slow me down was to listen to part of it.

At the end of the previous book, Magic Breaks, I think every fan was a bit stymied. The whole series up to that point dealt with what was going to happen with Kate and her Dad, Roland. There was sort of a resolution but we didn't know what it meant and oh my gosh, Curran's decision at the end was jaw dropping. (I'm trying desperately not to spoil anything for readers who haven’t caught up with the series). Essentially the ending in Magic Breaks gave fans a new and different storyline. Yep, you got it. I mean the Andrews' are tricky enough and they've upped the ante in Magic Shifts. I was extremely worried I would be disappointed in their new storyline but they don't give you a chance!

The action in Magic Shifts starts right away so you're not left floundering. What I found the most interesting in the beginning were the pack rules Kate and Curran had to obey. I wanted everyone to play nice but the way the rules are set up, they can't. There are agendas that need to be followed and the pack's future to worry about. At first I was a bit flabbergasted with some of the manipulations by the pack but it had to happen the way it did or Magic Shifts would have just been a ho-hum book.

Another thing I liked was Curran's new attitude. He needed a challenge and boy did he ever get one. He's a schemer and needs problems to overcome so he doesn't get bored. So, we see a new side of Curran. Not only Curran but in several of the characters. I was always a champion of Mahon but this book made me look at him in a different light. As a matter of fact, the characters all had to make so many adjustments; I enjoyed learning more about each and every one of them.

What I didn't like: I missed seeing a bit more of Derek but many other characters needed to have their time in the limelight and I understand why some of my favorites, while there, weren't in starring roles.

I don't blindly give Ilona Andrews' books my highest recommendation. I actually sit and think about many different things before I write a review. I TRY to find things I don't like to help the next reader make a decision about this series. When I have to hunt to find a "dislike", it tells me how much I loved the book.

As I said earlier, I was apprehensive about starting Magic Shifts and certainly didn't want it to end, but the Andrews have never disappointed me and now I can only wait to see what they come up with next. To me, each book in The Kate Daniels Series just adds another layer of goodness. The progression of ALL the characters blows me away. The research and imagination in each book astounds me. The storylines change and grow, the intensity of the plots knots my stomach and the characters have found a place in my heart. Yeah, I'm living vicariously through the Andrews' books. It's almost sad that I'm so invested in this series. I give credit where credit is due and the talent of this writing duo is one of the best in the business!

If I assigned stars to my reviews, there wouldn't be enough to tell you how much I savor each and every book!! To fully experience the wonder of this series, you need to start at the very beginning and I highly recommend you buy at least one of the books on audio!

Highest Recommendation!!!!!

Magic Breaks (Kate Daniels #7) by Ilona Andrews
Magic Breaks - Ilona Andrews

No matter how much the paranormal politics of Atlanta change, one thing always remains the same: if there’s trouble, Kate Daniels will be in the middle of it…

As the mate of the Beast Lord, Curran, former mercenary Kate Daniels has more responsibilities than it seems possible to juggle. Not only is she still struggling to keep her investigative business afloat, she must now deal with the affairs of the pack, including preparing her people for attack from Roland, a cruel ancient being with god-like powers. Since Kate’s connection to Roland has come out into the open, no one is safe—especially those closest to Kate.

As Roland’s long shadow looms ever nearer, Kate is called to attend the Conclave, a gathering of the leaders from the various supernatural factions in Atlanta. When one of the Masters of the Dead is found murdered there, apparently at the hands of a shapeshifter, Kate is given only twenty-four hours to hunt down the killer. And this time, if she fails, she’ll find herself embroiled in a war which could destroy everything she holds dear…

My thoughts:

Oh man if I wouldn’t have known better, I would have thought this was the last book. But they tell you right in the beginning that it is not and it is a relief.

This book was another roller coaster of emotion and fear of losing great people. I was really nervous starting this book, because I wasn’t sure who would survive and who we would lose.

Well the time has come and Roland is coming to town. But Kate is nowhere ready to fight him and to make it worse the People are about to start a war with the pack. Kate must pull in all her resources to prevent this war, of course some of the clans still can’t wait for something to happen so that they can remove Kate as the Consort, which makes it even harder for her to plan. On top of that, Curran had to leave the Keep to take care of something else and is MIA for quite a while.

Magic Rises (Kate Daniels #6) by Ilona Andrews
Magic Rises - Ilona Andrews

Mercenary Kate Daniels and her mate, Curran, the Beast Lord, are struggling to solve a heartbreaking crisis. Unable to control their beasts, many of the Pack’s shapeshifting children fail to survive to adulthood. While there is a medicine that can help, the secret to its making is closely guarded by the European packs, and there’s little available in Atlanta.

Kate can’t bear to watch innocents suffer, but the solution she and Curran have found threatens to be even more painful. The European shapeshifters who once outmaneuvered the Beast Lord have asked him to arbitrate a dispute—and they’ll pay him in medicine. With the young people’s survival and the Pack’s future at stake, Kate and Curran know they must accept the offer—but they have little doubt that they’re heading straight into a trap…

My thoughts:

This book had a somewhat different feel to it. The beginning seemed slower than the other books, but maybe it just seemed like it because they were preparing to travel.

Man this book was an emotional mess all around. Kate of course got the worse of it and she couldn’t do anything about it. Until she finally had enough and there she had nothing to lose anymore. She felt betrayed my Curran and was heartbroken but what surprised me the most, was that the pack still had her back. That just shows how far she has come and they know that she is loyal to the pack no matter what the cost.
