Review: The Female of the Species (Mindy McGinnis)
The Female of the Species - Mindy McGinnis

Series: N/A

Publisher: Katherine Tegen Books (2016)

Genre(s): Mystery, Contemporary Fiction, Young Adult

Me: cool, it's batgirl! Kick-ass, dude!

Also me: damn, insta-love... why? WHYYYY?

Also me: why is everything so freaking rushed?

Also me: yea, well want rushed? I can't connect with the characters.

Also me: I have the notion that I should be weeping at the ending, but I can't make myself care all that much. I did cry in that part about the puppies tho.

So, basically, great idea, but everything was so rushed I had no time to connect to the characters, they had no time to gain depth and the story had no time to take off. Superficially explored themes of rape culture, sexism and pedophilia. I'll say that the author was successful in showing how rape culture is so pervasive and it's just in the little things.

Could have been a really "food-for-thought" kind of book. It just felt confusing and a jumble. Just wasn't for me, I guess.

The Female of the Species
The Female of the Species - Mindy McGinnis 2.5
I picked this book out of blue, having no clue about it whatsoever just because the title seemed intriguing but actually there wasn't much about 'the female of the species' here, it was just like any another YA with cursing, drugs, sex, assaults, drinking, you name it and its in here and i hate to read those things it makes me sad. But yeah there were a few thought provoking lines, also i liked the characterization of the main protagonist Alex, she was kinda different these were the only few things which helped me finish this book.

The Female of the Species
The Female of the Species - Mindy McGinnis

I cheered for Alex, I loved her character, she was different and she knew it. She was like her father, a father that she didn’t know. She knew she had control issues, but how she was going to deal with them was another issue for which she didn’t have the answer for. I felt as though Alex was proud that she was able to protect the people that she loved, even though how she accomplished this task was seen as extreme and vicious.   She needed an adult, someone to talk to about the issues that were plaguing her mind but with her father gone and her mother being useless, Alex was alone. It was when she was finally bonding with some friends that the problems all began. Everyone needs friends and I loved the Emergency Girlfriend Pact that emerged between the girls.

The flow of this novel felt choppy to me as I read it. I understood the story as I read it but it felt clunky and very different from other novels.   I had to stop many times and think about what I had just read and how that flowed into the previous section.   The book itself was a disappointment to me as I felt I didn’t get as much out of it as I hoped to. I felt I worked a lot at reading it, putting it all together and there should have been more to it. I wanted it to be a five-star novel, I really did.

A Madness So Discreet - Mindy McGinnis

Forensic Files meets the times of Jack the Ripper resulting in a twisted mystery and a courtroom drama and the ultimate revenge.

I hope these characters are resurrected for another mystery! Or 10! ;)
