Judith Martin: In defense of ‘women’s pages’

Miss Manners sets things straight lest you look too far down your nose at what were called ‘women’s pages’. By her account there was a lot of intrepid and groundbreaking reportage, and the women who worked as journalists took full advantage of condescending sexist attitudes when interviewing anyone ignorant enough to doubt that an offhand remark to a young female reporter about, say, a new bombing campaign in North Vietnam (as President Johnson casually mentioned to a young Miss Manners at a White House Party she was covering), would end up in the paper.

Miss Manners' Guide to Excruciatingly Correct Behavior - Judith Martin,Gloria Kamen Some people read etiquette for advise. I probably did at first, or maybe just because I'd read anything. Now I read etiquette for the humor and the human insight. And for the humor, Miss Manners is the top.

Miss Manners' Basic Training: Eating - Judith Martin I love the idea of these little books: a scaled down mini course in one specific topic. Miss Manners is always an amusing writer.

Miss Manners' Guide for the Turn-of-the-Millennium - Judith Martin,Gloria Kamen I delight in etiquette columns, because clear guidelines are always helpful and because a skilled writer can make a simple answer into art. Martin makes me laugh, and provides me with useful information. I read her books as novels.
