Taking the plunge on Herbert Hoover
The Life of Herbert Hoover, Volume 1: The Engineer, 1874-1914 - George H. Nash

One of the things that I find the most frustrating about the pandemic is how it's cut off my access to inter-library loan. Losing the ability to request otherwise inaccessible books has put a crimp in my plans for my website, as well as denying me the ability to evaluate books before spending the money to add them to my shelves.

Worst of all, though, has been how it's supercharged my acquisitiveness. For a while now I've tried to rein in my book buying by reminding myself that with a little planning and a little patience I can read just about any book I want without having to spend a cent. Thanks to this, I have kept my bookshelves in a more manageable state than they would be had I purchased every book that I wanted to read. My TBR pile would be enormous.

For the past several months, though, inter-library loans have no longer been a option. My book buying has gone up commensurately. While I've focused on making long-term acquisitions, there have been a few that have ended up in the shopping cart less because I wanted to keep them then simply because I wanted to have access to them.

The latest candidate for acquisition is the six-volume Life of Herbert Hoover. It's a series that I've orbited around reading for nearly three decades now. At one point I owned the first three volumes, only to jettison them as low-priority reads cluttering my shelf in place of more useful books. Because, if I wanted to read them I could just request them through ILL, right?

Now I'm thinking about how much I'd like to have them. It helps that I'm in the process now of clearing out the space on my shelf for them by reading Forrest Pogue's four volumes on George Marshall, which I'm enjoying but would probably never reread. Reading about Hoover will probably prove even more time-consuming, but he's someone who I've always wanted to understand in depth. Six books covering his life would certainly achieve that; the challenge is to keep the cost manageable.

"In Defiance", by John W. Mefford
IN Defiance (An Ivy Nash Thriller, Book 1) - John W. Mefford

Ivy Nash Thriller book #1

Redemption Thriller book # 7

Ivy Nash is the second sub-series of the Redemption Thriller Collection. In the past few months I have been reviewing the Alex Trout Thrillers, the first of the sub-series and enjoyed them immensely, so I was eager to get my teeth (hands) on the Ivy Nash experience hoping to be as much entertained as in the first series.

John Mefford is a talented author and knows how to build his characters for us to relate to them and he does a good job in doing so. “In Defiance” starts by telling us a bit of Ivy’s background, a system kid growing up in foster care. As an adult Ivy became a special investigator for Child Protective Services and would do anything for the wellbeing of children. So, when a volatile hostage situation at a foster home happens Ivy is right there to help but unfortunately the situation reaches a bitter end and an investigation is launched. The story that follows is a series of twists and turns, accusations, abuse, connections to drugs and a shockwave of horrific childhood memories.

Ivy is a character you simply love: she is strong, independent and is not afraid of trouble. Her past will not dictate her present and she will go all out to prove that a 10 year old boy is not guilty of murder. There is some heart breaking moments.

The tempo is moderate and keeps the same pace from start to finish. Although I did find Ivy’s drama entertaining I was not as captivated by it has I was with Alex’s stories, anyways so far. . Having said this, “In Defiance” is still a page turner and a good opening for another exciting series. Looking forward to story #2.

Dangerous Flaws (Leah Nash Mysteries, #5) - Susan Hunter
Dangerous Flaws by Susan Hunter is one of those novels that you just want to keep on reading, my hubby actually read it first and liked it.

Leah Nash is a true crime writer that lives in Himmel Wisconsin, I live in Wisconsin even though the town is fictitious, at least I think it is, could not find it on a map or a google search. That is one of the reasons I wanted to read the book, I could relate to small-town life.

So on to the story, Leah is surprised when, while investigating the murder of a young college professor that the police they are focused on her ex-husband, Nick, as the suspect. She knows his flaws and that he is a liar but she does not think that murder is one of his flaws. She agrees to help Nick's lawyer, Gabe, and prove that he did not do it.

There is another death and she knows that she needs to find the murderer pretty quick. She finds hidden motives and has to strip  away lies and there are twists and turns that she never expected. Can she find the murderer? Well on that you will have to read the book.

Hubby at first said that it took him a bit to get into it but I didn't find that as a problem. I got into it right away, loved the characters, especially Leah and Miguel. The plot was interesting and intriguing and kept my attention from start to finish. I love good mysteries and this one is a good one. I highly recommend it and suggest you go get a copy!
