Mr. In-Between
Mr In Between - Neil Cross

I first got interested in Mr. In-Between when I learned Neil Cross is behind the series Luther and used to work on Spooks. While I was expecting it to be a raw story, I'm not sure anything could have prepared me for the thoroughly depressing world of Jon.

As an assassin to The Tattooed Man he kills and maims on order, without ever feeling anything about it. It is not just his job, but everything that seems to have this dark, gruesome and hopeless atmosphere. Even when he meets some people from 'before'  and he is said to re-enter the normal world, a feeling left me wondering whether he was being pulled there, or was he not pulling them with him into the darkness.

Nice is not a term to describe a novel like this. I can't even say I enjoyed reading it. But somehow it did have something interesting. However, I bore quickly from lengthy descriptions of torture and I'm not sure I would read more books by Mr. Cross.

Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Good Story and Characters
Captured by Neil Cross (2015-01-27) - Neil Cross

Kenny is dying with terminal cancer and only has a couple of weeks to live left. Kenny has drawn up a list of four people he felt he hadn’t done right and also needed to thank in some cases. One Is Mary his ex wife who is now basically his best friend and her husband is a friend to Kenny also. Then there was Mr. Jegnathron, third was Tommy Kintry and then Callie.  He decides to track down his old middle school friend- Callie who had been sweet to Kenny back in middle school. Kenny had been a loner, and a kid that just didn’t seem to fit in Callie had helped Kenny deal with his mom's death and his father’s mental illness. Then one day Callie just disappeared from Jr. High.  Nowt Callie has disappeared again  and was a mystery and was never found and it has already been a couple years. . Then Kenny starts his own investigation and questions Callie’s husband Jonathan who most believe why Callie is mysteriously missing and Kenny feels Jonathan is hiding something. Kenny’s friend Pat was once a cop and was also helping Kenny look for Callie and he finds in police records where Callie had been in the hospital in 2004 with broken wrists and cracked ribs. Then as time goes on Kenny starts changing and becoming more violent himself.

This was a good story to read a bit on the sad side but real life can be sad so should some stories and I liked this one. It had a great plot . I liked how Kenny wake things right between himself and some people before his time was done. But I did feel it was odd it was a girl from middle school who he really centered on. He is really determined to try to find out what happened to her. I just kinda think he would want to be with people who cared for him more recently but then again that would be his ex wife and her present husband so makes sense to me in a weird way . But I still really enjoyed this story . my heart went out to Kenny as he really wasn’t that old to have such a horrible diagnosis. I liked the ins and outs of this story and the characters and I recommend.

Pretty good.
Captured - Neil Cross

I received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review.

I was impressed with this story. Kenny is dying and he has a list of people that he wants to either say sorry to or say thank you to. With Kenny having a tumor you can tell how it changes him even his friends see it and worry about him.
He goes to apologizing to a young man who he didn't help the police capture the guy who tried to kidnap him when he was a young boy, to seeking out an old classmate.
I honestly couldn't see Kenny being this guy who could deliver pain to anyone. But that totally changed once he captured Jonathan and thanks to the sickness. It is changing him on more than one level and he knows this.
This classmate is someone who was very kind to Kenny back when they were about eleven years old. What he learns is that she disappeared and her husband was a suspect, and this pushes Kenny to find out what happened to Callie. This leads Kenny to Jonathan the husband of her.

Kenny wants answers as to what happened, and he will stop at nothing to make sure he gets answers. The only question is will he survive long enough to get them. Especially since as time progresses Kenny looks worse for wear.
Some of the scenes were gruesome but nothing too bad, just gruesome to someone who probably has a weak stomach.

I enjoyed the twist that was thrown into this story. I think I would give read more of this author's work.

Didn't work for me.
Mr In Between - Neil Cross
I received this book via NetGalley to give an honest review.

I have read one book by this author and I enjoyed his work, now with this book I literally felt like I just wanted to finish it quickly so I could move on.
At times I couldn't tell you what was going on. What I gathered is Jon is hired killer, one that people fear then he runs into an old friend from school. They play catch up, then Andy loses his family which causes Jon to lose it and kill someone without the consent of his boss. This leads to  Andy working  for the Tattooed man and Jon has issues with it. At the end Jon is free to put it in easy terms.
I think Jon has mental issues because of his childhood but I am not really sure. I just felt lost with this story, I honestly had no clue what was going on. I know that there is drugs and drinking, and killing and one finally becoming free it seems.

Now this may be a book for others who can truly understand what is all going on but for me it wasn't what I was expecting.

I don't know what else I can write in this review and this is truly a first for me. Normally the words come out easy but I guess because I didn't "click" with the book on any level there isn't much to write.

Mr In Between - Neil Cross

I would actually give this book 3 1/2 stars.

For me it was just okay. This was the second book I've read by Neil Cross reading this one after Captured kind of let me down. I skipped a LOT of pages in this one as sometimes the story just seemed to go on and on without adding anything to the story. I truly believe this story could have been told with a lot less words.

Thank you Open Road Integrated Media and Net Galley for providing me with this free e-galley in exchange for an honest review.
