Nightmares & Dreamscapes - Stephen King

Dubbed #1 New York times bestseller , Nightmares and Dreamscapes never failed to impress me . The whole book was extremely thick and it contained more than 5 different stories starting of with Dolan's Cadillac. The story of how the Nevada desert swallows a  whole grey Cadillac with its owner Dolan a thug , and his two body guards. The story involved the main character Bob whose wife was murdered by the infamous thug named Dolan who was never caught for his actions . Bob who was desperate after the lost of his wife set up in his own ways to make Dolan pay for what he has done to his beloved wife , Elizabeth. Knowing the culprit who did this as they have once met before a long time ago Bob followed each and every step of Dolan , learning all of his routines . Bob then a school teacher quit his job and became a road technician as he had the perfect plan in mind that caused him to sacrifice his job . Knowing the travel patterns of the grey Cadillac and its usual routes Bob recalls vividly how he watched a movie of how infamous robbers managed to detour and mislead the truck that was carrying loads of cash to a deserted area before executing the final cut. Bob was inspired by the movie. Day by day he imagined the sweet revenge that Dolan was soon going to taste. The day that Bob waited for arrived only to have the Nevada desert swallow the Grey Cadillac as what Bob had anticipated for all these days.

The Moving Finger ★★★★★
Nightmares & Dreamscapes - Stephen King

Another favorite SK short story classic. Meekly polite accountant Howard Mitla goes to war against an intruder creeping out of the bathroom sink’s drain hole. My favorite part of the escalating lunatic battle is when

he hears that last tiny voice of sanity speaking to him, asking him not about the dubious reality of the moving finger, but “Are you sure you want to trust your life to a pair of electric hedge clippers you bought on sale?”

(spoiler show)

I enjoyed this as much on this re-read as originally back in 1993, but there is some pretty cringeworthy stereotyping of a Vietnamese shopkeeper. It could be interpreted as the main character’s perceptions, rather than the author’s, but I don’t think so, as it's beside the point of the story.

I read this for the Creepy Crawlies square in 2016 Halloween Bingo

Rainy Season ★★★★★
Nightmares & Dreamscapes - Stephen King

This short story has all the elements of Stephen King greatness. Vividly drawn characters,  sly humor, escalating story progression, gore, and visceral horror. It even has a fart joke.

Better fasten your shutters, because in Willow, it rains toads.

Part of the Nightmares and Dreamscapes collection. Audio version, read by the talented Yeardley Smith.

I read this for the Dark & Stormy Night square for the 2016 Halloween Bingo.

Nightmares & Dreamscapes - Stephen King

'What are they going to take with them?' I ask Dave. 'When this is all over, what are they going to take with them? What difference does it make for them, do you think?'
The look on Dave's face is surprised and considering. Then he turns back to look at Matt and smiles. 'They're going to take each other,' he says.

All the explanation that follows is one big heart-knock.

It could be why Dave Mansfield and all the other Dave Mansfields across the country keep on doing this, year after year. It's a free pass. Not back into childhood — it doesn't work that way — but back into the dream.

Nightmares & Dreamscapes - Stephen King

These are TOO DAMNED MANY pages about baseball. Yet...

He is one of two natural athletes on the Bangor West team. Matt Kinney is the other. Although the two boys are physical opposites — Kinney slim and still fairly short, Larrobino tall and well muscled — they share a quality that is uncommon in boys their age: they trust their bodies. Most of the others on the Bangor West squad, no matter how talented, seem to regard feet, arms, and hands as spies and potential traitors.

... for these little bits I will read anything King throws at me.
