Low expectations, and it was really cannot-put-it-down good!
Pestilence - Laura Thalassa

Only tried it because it was free on kindle unlimited. I expected a cheesy almighty warrior falls for beautiful girl story.

Boy, was I wrong!

This was gritty! It started with a really grisly scene where the heroine, a tough firefighter sets the male protag on fire. Literally. And painfully. And awfully.

Most of the story is truly spent on Pestilence slowly being showns that humans, humanity are not as awful as they seem (and they seem pretty awful).

I loved that it wasn't a quick insta-anything.

A really gripping story and some development not only in the characters, but also their relationship.

Can't wait for the second installment!

Review: Pestilence (The Four Horsemen #1) by Laura Thalassa
Pestilence - Laura Thalassa

They came to earth—Pestilence, War, Famine, Death—four horsemen riding their screaming steeds, racing to the corners of the world. Four horsemen with the power to destroy all of humanity. They came to earth, and they came to end us all.

When Pestilence comes for Sara Burn’s town, one thing is certain: everyone she knows and loves is marked for death. Unless, of course, the angelic-looking horseman is stopped, which is exactly what Sara has in mind when she shoots the unholy beast off his steed.

Too bad no one told her Pestilence can’t be killed.

Now the horseman, very much alive and very pissed off, has taken her prisoner, and he’s eager to make her suffer. Only, the longer she’s with him, the more uncertain she is about his true feelings towards her … and hers towards him.

And now, well, Sara might still be able to save the world, but in order to do so, she'll have to sacrifice her heart in the process.

2 ½ -3   ★

I had a hate-love relationship with this book. Well maybe not that drastic but close lol.

I really liked the idea of the book and it had me really intrigued, I liked the sassy snarky character and it was really easy to follow.

What I didn’t like was the insta lust/ love, not really love in the beginning but the lust was there for sure. That was not even the part that bothered me it was more the timing of said lust really was distracting at times. For an example:

He shot her in the back TWICE with arrows, just yanked out the arrows tied her back to the horse and dragged her through the snow for hours so hard that her arms came out of her sockets after she finally passes out from the pain hours later and wakes up and cant care for herself because of all the injuries and he needs to carry her to the toilet, all she can think about is how hard his chest it and how close his lips are to her.

There were a few more situations like that.  Also some others were a bit awkward to read like he being an almighty higher being that is pretty much older than dirt and then he sits there and stares at her like a teenage boy seeing boobies for the first time and then starts awkwardly “suckling” on her nipple. SO yeah not sure if that was all supposed to be a bit funny but it really kind of felt awkward to read.

But then again it had a lot of funny moments in it, but also some dark and thought provoking moments that I really enjoyed.

Overall I ended it up liking it more than I thought I would but not loving it by far and some parts where just way of chart and overplayed.

This all might just me and I’m sure plenty of people can overlook some of the awkward stuff and will love it.

I rate it 2 ½ -3   ★

Pestilence
Pestilence - Laura Thalassa ⭐️4 stars⭐️

Caught him in a good mood, I did.
Not.
"So... I haven't gotten sick."

"Astute observation, mortal."

"Is that just luck, or do you control who gets the plague?" I ask.

"Were you born with all your organs intact?" he responds.

"Yes..." I say cautiously.

"Good," he responds, "then I expect you to use the one beneath your skull."

Pestilence is such a sweetheart I swear! A mass murdering sweetheart but sweetheart anyway.
Whoever disagrees can come fight me.

I had some issues with our heroine at times and I think I wanted something different when it came to the ending I didn't want my murdering baby to give up being Pestilence, at least not like that. It felt too..easy I guess. but I really enjoyed it and now I want War!

Pestilence, Volume 1 (Pestilence, #1)
Pestilence, Volume 1 (Pestilence, #1) - ... Pestilence, Volume 1 (Pestilence, #1) - Frank Tieri I really loved the premise for Pestilence, and had high hopes for the graphic novel. I was initially put off a bit by the language and the nudity in the first issue, but I'm not the type of person to poo-poo something just because it gets a little cruder than I normally like. So I kept reading.

The second issue and third issues - Death Takes and Death Adapts - were the best in the volume. The second one hooked me proper. The third maintained my interest with how swiftly they were moving things along.

By the fourth - Death Attacks - I was losing interest. The action was still going strong, but Pestilence, Vol 1 was proving itself to be a one-trick pony complete with typical hidden hero cliche. Blah, blah, blah, yawn, yawn, blah.

But the fifth issue was outright disgusting. Death Reveals revealed the true aim of this graphic novel was to let the writers unleash the immature teenage boys inside them. They had obviously gleefully been looking back to the age when they discovered and began using curse words in secret. Whatever, I could deal with that. But when images of a obese naked female zombie with zombie triplets hanging out of her gaping stomach appear on the page, I got mad. There's a bit of crudity and nudity, and then there's been just stupid and juvenile.

But really, there was one line in this poor excuse for a book that sealed the deal on me calling it the piece of somewhat skillfully drawn crap that it is.

"The p*ssy has a p*ssy?"

There was a sixth issue - "Death Ends" -that was okay. It was a decent ending for the arc. But, honestly, at that point I was so irritated it could have been an absolute masterpiece and I'd still have ripped the pages out to use as toilet paper.

Obviously I'm not the target audience for this piece, as I ask that there be something to the dialogue other than curse words, references to reproductive anatomy, and whinging. I think I'm doubly irritated because this graphic novel series could have been so good, and instead it used every bit of originality and creativity it was allotted in the idea for the plot. It was then all downhill from there.

Do not recommend.

Disclaimer: I received a copy of this book from Edelweiss for review consideration.

Pestilence (The Four Horsemen #1) by T.A. Chase
Pestilence - T.A. Chase

There is "not enough" trend in this book, IMHO.

Human Bart's not sick enough the way his illness is described.

Pest does not care enough & not emotional enough. He is detached and doesn't spend enough time with Bart.

Pest and Death talk about secrecy but they are not secretive enough. In fact they can't seem to keep their mouths shut.

The whole falling in love process is not convincing enough.

The whole case of pandemic about to explode is not believable either.
