The Autumnlands Tooth and Claw Volume 1
The Autumnlands Volume 1: Tooth and Claw - Benjamin Dewey,Jordie Bellaire,Kurt Busiek

5 Stars, buy it.

I've read up to issue 6 previously but need a refresher before going back to where I left off.  I still love the story and characters (except for the bad guys of course) and I still love the art.  I remember this from when I initially read the first 6 issues that I don’t like the long paragraphs that they stick on with the book covers. I’m not really sure what the book covers are supposed to be, maybe magical texts of theirs? The Autumnlands is highly original and should be read by anyone who likes comics. In anycase, for anyone who loves animals, in particular talking animals, I highly recommend this series.

My general Notes: The first issue you meet Dusty, Gharta and Sandhorst. Gharta tries a spell which is forbidden and she destroys the city but produces a champion. In issue two, the survivors are attacked by a bison herd. At that moment he champion is freed and to everyone's horror he's not an animal.in issue 3 we meet Goodfoot and Affa. Goodfoot shows her true colors and so does councilor Sandhorst. Issue four- Dusty, who is also the narrator goes out scouting with the champion while Goodfoot and Councilor Sandorst are up to no good.  In Issue 5 Dusty and some others go on a secret mission for the Champion. Anxiety skyrockets for me when Councillor Sandhorsts arrests Gharta and Affa. Affa and Gartha seem to have a relationship of some sort going on. The plots continue to thicken. In Issue 6:  The parley happens and Gharta is finally freed.  However we loose someone and I won’t spoil it for you.  The asshole Councillor Sandhorst comes out looking the hero.

List of characters for my reference.

Bhord- Pug dog who is grey

Councillor Sandorst- is the owl

Dunstan/Dusty- White dog/terrier

Gharta- is the warthog

Goodfoot- fox/coyote

Gutruk- walrus I think

Leahroyd- the champion (and only human)

Affa- Giraffe

The Autumnlands: Tooth + Claw #6
AUTUMNLANDS TOOTH & CLAW #6 (MR) - Cool Image

5 Stars, Buy it

Again with the weird book cover page after a page or two of comic. I don’t get these at all. Anyway, this is it. The parley with the Bison tribe.  7 Scars (head of Bison) meets with the Champion. The parley is broken and of course there is fighting. Gharta and the others imprisoned are rescued by Dusty. There are tons of fleeing characters and lots of chaos. I won’t say more than that as it’s a good issue and should be read.

Oh, incase I haven’t mentioned this before, this series isn’t meant for anyone younger than teens. It’s heavy on violence (though not gratuitously) and there is explicit cussing. But those things don’t bother me. Anyway, this is a seriously intense issue. I could feel my heart racing as I read it.  Arg I hate that damned Owl. And Poor Dusty. UGH! Great issue but it’s left with a huge cliffhanger as the end of story arc 1.  And I read the letter in the back, and like with Saga, this comic is taking a little bit of a break. NNNNOOOOOO!!! You can’t get me hooked on these stories and then take breaks. Sob. Not fair!!!

Overall fantastic and I’m dying to read more (in case you hadn’t noticed). I highly recommend this series to anyone who likes comic books.

Autumnlands Tooth and Claw #5 - Kurt Busiek

Councillor Sandorst places Gharta and Affa under arrest.  Goodfoot is still plotting with the Bison. Meanwhile, the Champion is working on some secret stuff. Dusty seems to be the narrator most of the time and I like him a lot. Overall this is a decent issue but not as exciting as some of the previous ones.  The Owl (Councillor Sandorst) seriously makes me mad. But every comic needs a bad guy. But the anxiety he provokes! Anyway still a great series and I still recommend buying it.

Description (Comixology): The conspirators make their move, but the Champion has a few surprises for them.

I really love this series so far, but that being said, I still don’t get the opening pages of this series. In every issue it almost starts like a book. It’s a bit weird but so far it really is the only thing I don’t like much about the series.

The champion and the white dog go to investigate why the group was attacked by bats and also to see the Bison situation. Meanwhile Goodfoot is manipulating Councillor Sandorst and is plotting the destruction of the survivors or so it seems. The champion and Dusty return to the group and the champion is bargening with Goodfoot.  The issue pretty much ends there.

I like this issue, but not quite as much as the others. I realize not every issue can be jammed pack full of action so I feel a bit guilty for downgrading this issue.  But overall the art is still fantastic, and the writing is great.  This is a great comic, but recommend starting from the beginning. But still the plot did move and I still enjoyed this, so good effort but not the best issue.

Description (Comixology): With the Great Champion away, the city is vulnerable to Goodfoot's machinations.

So the champion doesn’t seem to know he’s the champion and he is confused as to where he is.  Two of the animal characters are arguing and then Goodfoot enters - possibly a fox as they are known to be sly and tricksters.Councillor Sandorst- is the owl and is attempting to take charge and seems to be making friends with Goodfoot. Gharta- is the warthog and seems to be being pushed out of the way by Sandorst and Goodfoot. Meanwhile, the champion comes back to help the others who aren’t being protected by other animals (who are headed by Gharta). OK seriously, don’t like Sandorst, not that we are supposed to. But really what an obnoxious Owl. Also the Champion curses like a Sailor (so do I, so I don’t mind). The issue ends with Goodfoot going to talk to the enemy Bison.

This comic continues to impress me with its art work and its writing.  I’m a huge fan of animals, so talking animal comics is just up my ally. And it shouldn’t be a suprise to any comic fan that this comic is put out by Image (one of the best publishers for comics out there).  If you like fantasy and talking animals, I really recommend this. The writing is great and I find myself caring about the characters. Definitely an awesome comic to read.

Description (Comixology): Enter: Goodfoot the Sly. Is she here to help the wizards...or herself? [Hint: herself.]
