Motives
Dark Paradise - Sara Craven

I don't have strong feelings about this book. It was different from what I expected. Matt's reasons for taking Kate to the Caribbean were more involved than just revenge. That part was kind of different. Matt is actually a nice guy, but Kate has already prejudged him as a jerk because of a bad experience in her last relationship. The way she talked to him at the wedding reception was pretty cold. I wish that some of the jerky heroes in the other Harlequin Presents I've read where they deserved it had been given that set down. Normally, I think the Vintage HPs are more exciting, but this one wasn't really. It wasn't bad. Kind of forgettable.

If music be the food of love...
Island of the Heart - Sara Craven

This was a ho-hum read for me. I didn't like the characters all that much. Flynn is a mean jerk for most of the book. I can deal with a jerk hero who seems to be head over heels for the heroine and that's why he's a jerk. In this case, it was hard to believe he was so crazy in love with Sandie. His excuse for how he was treating her was pretty darn lame. Sandie seems very immature. I really didn't like that one point she seemed like she was considering having an affair with Crispin even though she knew he was married. I just can't stomach adultery and while Sandie is young and inexperienced, I disliked that she was even thinking about getting with Crispin for a hot minute. Other than the characters not being likable, there's really not enough substance to this story for my tastes. While music is always an appealing element to a story, the music didn't add that much to it for my tastes. I am a pretty big fan of Sara Craven, but this one left me underwhelmed. It wasn't terrible, just not anything that stood out in this book for me.

I Actually Read This Twice
Wife Against Her Will (Harlequin Presents, #2544) - Sara Craven

book trigger warning: heroine was raped

This was one of the first Harlequin Presents I read when I started up again after a 30 year hiatus. I hated it, but recently felt like rereading it and seeing what I think now.

Joel: [Is typical sexist horrible HP hero.]
Darcy: "I hate you I hate you I hate you."
[forced marriage, followed by forced seduction sexytimes]
Darcy: "That was awesome! TOO awesome. Get away from me you disgusting pervert!"
Joel: "I feel terrible about having been a typical sexist horrible HP hero, so will now respect your oft-stated desire to have nothing to do with me."
Darcy, to self: "He loves someone else! He was just using me for sex!"
Joel: "Please spend platonic time with me because I'm so crazy about you."
Darcy: "Get away from me you disgusting pervert!"
[initiated by Darcy sexytimes]
Joel: "I love you I love you I love you."
Darcy: "He loves someone else! He was just using me for sex! Get away from me you disgusting pervert!"
Joel: "I was only a typical sexist horrible HP hero because I fell in love with you at first sight."
Me: "Oh fuck off, the both of you!"
