The good, the bad, and the unclear | The Bone Season by Samantha Shannon
The Bone Season - Samantha Shannon

If I said that The Bone Season is like a roller-coaster, I would be lying. Most people would think this is a bad since roller-coasters are the most exciting rides at amusement parks. Well, most people are wrong. I am of the opinion that roller-coasters are just metal death traps with a deceiving name. We should not tempt fate by flinging ourselves in the air at unnaturally high speeds just for the sake of an adrenaline rush.

Anyway, The Bone Season is more like bumper cars. You are shoved into a small, mostly dark arena and told to smash into other people. There is no real structure to the madness. Due to conservation of momentum and other principles of physics that I vaguely remember from high school, as soon you crash into each other, both of you are repelled from each other. In The Bone Season, as soon as you touched something interesting, you are immediately pushed away. You bump into a lot of other people (or a lot of people bump into you if you are a rookie) but in the end you don't really accomplish anything.

Lumberjanes #29-32
Lumberjanes #29 - Leyh Kat,Carey Pietsch,Shannon Watters
Lumberjanes #30 - Leyh Kat,Carey Pietsch,Shannon Watters
Lumberjanes #31 - Shannon Watters,Kat Le... Lumberjanes #31 - Shannon Watters,Kat Leyh,Carey Pietsch
Lumberjanes #32 - Shannon Watters,Kat Le... Lumberjanes #32 - Shannon Watters,Kat Leyh,Carey Pietsch

Here we have the next story line for the Lumberjanes series and we get to catch up with the Greek gods in this one!!

Diane is back and with a quest that the girls have no choice but to get in the way of. I'm not going to add the synopsis of each comic so I don't spoil things from one issue to the next but these tell a cohesive story that continue the involvement of the Greek gods past the first story line of the series. It also brings in some of the other characters of Greek mythology in their typically Lumberjane way.

I will never tire of this series.

As always, they use the names of some awesome women as exclamations, April says both in this set, first exclaiming "Holy Nakano Takeko" in #30 and then "Sweet Mary Shelley" in #32. Be sure to check out their stories at the links because both are hardcore lady-types.

I know, I know, this isn't my most in depth review, but not much more to say than what I have already in previous posts about just how much of my heart these girls have. There's great representation here, the girls work together, their differences make them stronger, and they aren't all perfect at everything. They each work at what they know and grow in what they don't and sometimes the best lines comes from the strangest places. I think Molly has the best moment of this set.

I can't wait to read the next adventure these girls go on!

Lumberjanes #25-28
Lumberjanes #25 - Leyh Kat,Shannon Watters,Laura Lewis,Chynna Clugston Flores,Brooke Allen
Lumberjanes #26 - Ayme Sotuyo,Leyh Kat,Shannon Watters
Lumberjanes #27 - Ayme Sotuyo,Leyh Kat,Shannon Watters
Lumberjanes #28 - Myra Hild,Leyh Kat,Shannon Waters

These issues bring the next storyline of Lumberjanes to us after their run in with the awesome mermaids. This time the girls must contend with a giant bird beast that has kidnapped the High Council. As always, they are amazing.

Things I Loved:

  • Did you ever wonder what happened to all the kittens that Ripley gave every person when she was a deity for five seconds back in #4? Well, be prepared to find out.
  • The girls' problem solving skills, with every member of the team on it in some way.
  • Meeting some other members of the camp
  • The empathy of the girls
  • The adorable backup story in #25

I'd make a list of things I didn't like, but there weren't any. There rarely are. I especially loved the way they pseudo-defined what makes a "hard-core lady-type".

As usual, these issues have some wonderful ladies:

Lumberjanes
Lumberjanes Vol. 5: Band Together - Noelle Stevenson,Shannon Watters,Grace Ellis,Brooke Allen
Lumberjanes #17 - Shannon Waters, Noelle Stevenson,Brooke Allen
Lumberjanes #18 - Shannon Watters
Lumberjanes #19 - Leyh Kat,Shannon Waters,Carolyn Nowak
Lumberjanes Vol. 20 - Brooke Allen,Grace Ellis,Kate Leth, Noelle Stevenson,Carolyn Nowak,Shannon Waters

#17 actually wraps up the events of the last volume, reviewed hereThen the next story really starts with the mermaids. I have to admit, I'm a bit like April when it comes to mermaids. And then these mermaids were these whole other amazing creatures, especially on the heels of reading Hunger Makes Me A Modern Girl: A Memoir by Carrie Brownstein. They were so AMAZING!

The story plays out well and I enjoyed the time spent with April on these issues. There are too many girls for each volume to show character progression for all of them, but we see different girls get their moments as the series progresses. April is definitely the one I identify with the most, and we both love mermaids, and I have to hear and learn what she does over and over all the time. That said, it has also been great to watch the others grow when the stories focus on them and remind myself of the lessons they learn as well. It's good reinforcement.

Now, on to another of my favorite things about this series: The Amazing Women in History that are mentioned in their exclamations. Collectively, this volume mentions the following women that you really must check out!
