I really liked Haskell’s debut, The Princess Curse, so I read this one right away. It was good, and I liked the several ways she subverts the standard cliches. Haskell also does a nice job of making her setting specific and real, rather than a vague pseudo-Middle Ages (she did the same in Princess Curse, so this is not surprising). I did like The Princess Curse a bit more, I think because of the fairy tale aspect, but she’s definitely a middle grade writer to watch. And her upcoming book, Castle of Thorns, sounds like it will be fantastic!
