Starstruck - Julie Kenner

Hate to tell heroine this but straight guys rarely are interested in just being friends unless they consider you to be as appealing as a root canal. Also, friends in general rarely put up with harassment about their finances and work habits. Ergo, the whole bit about him being only a friend is a bit delusional.

So our h, figuring out that the H is going to be at an opening for a resort owned by someone she's hoping to land as a client (and possibly other things as well), convinces him to take her along. Only the suite isn't exactly the sort of suite they thought it was. And now she's gotta try to ignore that her other best friend - the H - is hot, that she accidentally got a peep show some time back when he was showering, etc. Oh yeah, and that she kissed him while plastered a day or two before.

She fails. Of course, he doesn't exactly discourage her, since he's been trying to figure out how to get past her barriers.

Eventually, he tells her he wants more than a fling. She gets upset. Storms off. They spend time thinking about it, and finally decide to negotiate.

It lost half a point for her being obtuse and/or dumb enough to think she could have her cake and eat it too. Even if they hadn't had the weekend of hot sex, sooner or later, he'd have gotten tired of being overlooked based on her hangups and she'd have lost the friendship anyway.

Why I was not into that book, though I normally like that writer:
Starstruck - L.A. Witt

Levi's family reasons to stay in the closet.

I could have lived easily with the career one - that made sense and was realistic, especially for an action star. The other one was obsolete for the story (as was the whole family) drama and an uninteresting plot tool, that failed to add drama - it only annoyed.

A nearly 40-year old adult guy who is doing professional therapy for some time should be able to distance himself enough to not fear the anyway ever-present disapproval.

It also didn't make any sense in combination with his parents being ex-alcoholics.

So obviously they sucked at parenting.

So the family plot line annoyed me to no end, and made Levi look like a sad and lukewarm personality.

Especially given that his parents are not only selfish bigots who were alcoholics through his childhood and youth, no they are really really bad people:

"The other part of him had watched them [the parents] side with his ex-brother-in-law because apparently putting Levi's sister in the hospital was less of a disgrace than her divorcing his sorry ass."

Excuse me? The parents have been drinking through their childhood, they are bigots and they don't support their own daughter against a violent spouse???

But he still cares what they think???

I am not buying it.

So Levi was a bust.

And the other guy? Was the starstuck fan-turned-into-actor, beautiful, nice and meh.

Also not a good plot twist: Carter knew that Levi was in the closet (and the career reason was actually a sadly realistic concern), so he came on to Levin knowingly, then after the sex came the ultimatum - come out of the closet or we're done.

Nice.

So Carter was a bust too.

Starstruck #1

You can download this book for free on Amazon!

I've had this book on my kindle for a while, I don't know why I did not pick this up earlier, it was a really great read!

I don't read a lot about Aliens and I have no idea why because I love stories about them! There are endless possibilities when writing about aliens and that is what makes them so interesting. I love Marsha, she was a really ordinary girl, a nobody actually. She was not one of the cool kids. I love all the high school drama, I'm really fond of that in books and movies. I don't really know why but it's always really funny. The love story was a bit getting on my nerves at some points, it was irritating. But then I thought about the ages of the characters and that totally makes sense.

I struggled just a little bit with the middle of the book, it was getting a bit slow and I was less excited about reading it. Still, I really liked this book, it was a quick and entertaining read.

I'm curious about these martians because we do not get to learn a lot about them in this book. I'm excited to know what is happening next!

(and the cover is gorgeous)

Thanks for reading,

Reading progress update: I've read 250 out of 360 pages.
Starstruck - 'Michael Wm Kaluta','Elaine Lee'

this is at times enjoyable, but also a bit exhausting--so I am taking a break and tackling a novel before getting back to it.

reading the big, cheeky Glossary that's in the middle of this book.
